On average how many records do they sell post vitalogy or so? 500,000-700,000 records?
I dont know what other bands sell at that level, but do they tour the world and play to large arenas? or are they mainly stuck headlining and playing theatres and orpheums?
Thats my impression, and if bands who sell those numbers play arenas, i feel they usually co headline...
So im wondering, do pearl jams current record sales allow them to have the schedule tour they do?
i would say no. They are obviously living off the Ten paycheck, those first three records are the only reason they can still tour the world and play and mostly sellout large arenas and stadiums.
my point, i understand why thye might want to skip some midwest cities, or the south, or sell a bootleg twice..or try other things for promotion to make money. So they dont lose it all on tour.
correct.
I dont know?

Definitely, no question about it. I just dont think their current record sales would normally allow a band to tour the way they do, so they are pretty lucky in the fact that their first 2-3 albums allowed for them to do it now.
No Code: 1.40M
Yield: 1.59M
LO2L: 926k
Binaural: 745k
Riot Act: 503k
Lost Dogs: 388k
RVM: 716k
Avocado: 680k
I'd guestimate about 2.5M sales of official boots. That's a total of about 9.4M sales since 1996 or about 850k per year on average. This doesn't include DVD's, singles, Mirrorball, etc.
I would say it's a pretty solid stretch for a major rock band after it's initial breakthrough/ prime years.

the band definetly makes more on tour than from mediocre selling records like s/t and riot act. the band signs a deal for a tour, and as long as they show up and play the show, whether there are 4 people there, or 25,000, they make the same amount. thats how i understand the tour arrangement anyway.

Touring definitely pays the bills and keeps the organization afloat. They are a bit like the Grateful Dead in that regard.
I think the large majority of people at a Pearl jam show attend based on two things; 1. the strentgh of their first 3 albums and especially Ten, 2. their well earned reputation of being one of the best live bands of all time.
The one thing their live show does not do is win people over to their new music.

Why is this crazy?
They do it for the same reason Pearl Jam do, a couple of big albums that really captured the publics attention and they are generally good and entertaining performers.
Lots of bands fall under this banner; Bon Jovi, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Def Leppard. Sell 10 million copies of an album or two, learn how to be good performers and you'll be able to continually tour and be a big attraction.
bon jovi still has hit singles though and stil lwrites top 10 music.
worldwide suicide was a hit single...

on rock radio, bon jovi is a hit on all formats, unfortunately.
it sjust interesting that pearl jam still draw such a large crowd. i guess their first couple albums were really that good
are they really? i havent heard a new bon jovi song since that terrible "its my life" song. that had to be a solid 7 or 8 years ago.

thats what i would attribute it to. sure theres some people who knew the first couple albums and figure it would make a good date night, so they go based off liking black and daughter. but i think theres a strong contigent of fans who like what the band has done post-vitalogy and feel that no matter how many times they go see PJ they arent gonna get the same show. so a lot go as often as they can. and the fact that pearl jam is still a pretty big name in rock music doesn't hurt either.

Unlike everyone else, I wasn't a fan before the Avocado album. I love it, and I love the fact that every show is different.
I also love the fact that you can download your show right from the source. For the people who complain abut the quality of the downloads, its a lot better than having to sneak a tape recorder into the venue.

you wouldn't have to with pearl jam. and the quality complaint lies oin the fact that the CDs in 00 and 03 were the same price, as well as being "real" and sounding better
