This is a song that really hits me deeply. It's so sad and beautiful at the same time. When "drifting away, drifting away..." starts I sometimes almost lose it. I love the distortion at the end too, it's almost like overbearing emotion. Such a wonderful song, probably the best album closer as well, next to All Those Yesterdays and All Or None.

I listened to Binaural a lot the last 2 weeks, PW and Sleight of hand are amazing.

yeh parting ways rules.
i prefer the way they play it live but. in the live version when ed is singing "drifting away" the drums kinda kick up a bit but in the studio version they dont.
and i love the way ed holds the note on the Benaroya version.

One thing that amazes me about Parting Ways is how well the music emphasises the lyrical theme.
It's like this - you know it's going to end soon, but you're fooling yourself it won't. The music reflects that in the way that it's slow and generally peaceful (you fooling yourself and thinking it's all ok), but then there are these chords that make you feel uneasy (they are like the moments when you realize you're just fooling yoursefl).
They start right after the first 'parting ways', then disappear only to come back in a powerful way after the second 'parting ways' - this chord can really scare the hell out of you (or at least me).
I always imagined that it's then that the man finally realizes that there's no saving their relationship.
The live versions fit even more with all those disharmonous sounds at the end (I love the version from Chicago '00).

Your posts on this song and in the SOH thread are really eloquent, very descriptive of things that are hard to describe.
I was at the Chicago 2000 show, with my girlfriend (now wife), but that was near the lowest point in our relationship. I really was questioning very deeply whether my relationship was in that place. And then they came back from the encore break with Sleight Of Hand. Underrated show IMHO, one of their best ever.

i love parting ways, its one of my top ten favs, my only dissapointment is that on the album it has the hidden track, so that i dont like to use it on compilations that i make, i wish i was able to take the hidden track off of it.
but its such a wonderful song

Parting Ways and Undone are the only two songs by anyone that give me this warm feeling. Ironically with a title like 'undone' and lyrics like 'drifting away' I feel security and solace in them.
i love parting ways, its one of my top ten favs, my only dissapointment is that on the album it has the hidden track, so that i dont like to use it on compilations that i make, i wish i was able to take the hidden track off of it.

writers block, which is just the type writer sounds, it wouldnt bother me if it was quick after the song, but it takes a 3 to 4 minute song and makes it a 7 to 8 minute track, so i could put atleast 1 more song in the blank space on my compilations

Very underrated song, It personally is probably one of my favorites for personal reasons, but I really have come to love how the band does it acoustically now

It is pretty easy to edit that stuff off. Windows has a wav editor built in, and the one in EAC is really easy to use.

exquisite song. i really like the benaroya version, especially how ed sings that last 'drifting away', the way he holds that note. it's beautiful in its sadness.
