damn!
i thought id seen this one before but i think it was an alternate version of the vid with more shots of the band playing and maybe black and white footage?
cant remember...but the end of this made me tear up and gave me chills...that was amazingly powerful (so of course it was banned  ) i always assumed the band left it ambiguous (as stip said in his review of the song) on purpose...i cant even imagine the press they would've gotten if that was allowed to air in 92...
i love this band!!

It was 2002 or 2003 when they showed it. I saw parts of MTV's 20 Most Controversial and they were all unedited. It was on at like 3 am once.

They showed Happiness in Slavery by Nine Inch Nails uncensored

I dont really see too many differences except the hail hitler scene in the classroom, then at the end obviousyl putting the gun in his mouth.

fuck thats powerful.

This video should be posted in the "never forget the first time" thread. That video is what changed my life. So cool that pearl jam got big on such an interesting, unique, powerful video/piece of art.

i have always thought it would have been so much better with out all of the shots of ed and the over dramatic facial expressions and lip syncing.

I hate the narrative of the video to begin with (although I will admit that it's extremely well done), but those band shots are just atrocious. If I were a band I'd never have appeared in a video after that debacle either.

What's Happiness in Slavery? Is that an alternative name for Closer?

They also showed the uncensored Smack My Bitch Up by Prodigy. Bad ass video.

They only showed like a minute or so of Happiness in Slavery. It's the one in black and white with the guy getting mutilated in a torture chair

its amazing how much of a difference one scene can make, i mean way back in the day i wasnt sure what happened for the first few times i saw it, but then it was pretty well known that jeremy killed himself, but showing the gun in his mouth is just a huge difference.

Hmm... the video may be a bit MTV-esque, and the band shots are pretty cheesy... but it's still fucking powerful. Especially the gun at the end.

I had never seen that version, and I know the ending with the gun in full view inserted into the mouth was a major difference.

But another thing I noticed was the students saying the pledge, extending their flattened palms facing down into the air towards the flag - reminiscent of the Nazi salute. This represents another very strong political message that is slightly different from the other messages prevalent in the video, and I'm pretty sure it's not in the widely broadcast version.

Anyone know for sure?

Umm... I think it was in the uncensored version, although I can't be sure.
