Here's a thread to ask all those niggling Pearl Jam questions that you've always had and never knew who to ask.
My first: Ed on guitar: when exactly did this start?
I know he didn't play on Porch during the Ten tour and so the first songs that he always plays guitar on apart from that would be RVM and Small Town.
RVM was premiered on 1993.05.13, Small Town on 1993.06.16 - was Ed playing on them as of yet? If not, when did he start? He's definitely playing guitar live by 1994 on those and the Vitalogy era songs that are applicable (Better Man, Immortality etc.)
And did he begin to play on Porch at the same time or did that not come until 1995 or so?
And was he using his black Telecaster with the maple neck, the SNL '94 guitar, exclusively at this stage?
I've always wondered this, any help would be awesome.
This thread is for everybody to draw upon the wealth of fan knowledge that this board possesses, so go nuts.

i'm not sure if ed played guitar with bad radio or not, but his first guitar contribution was porch, and then betterman written way back when.
When in doubt - youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5ZY23F933E shows ed to be playing on whipping dec 7th 1993. not sure about small town or RVM. and yeah his maple neck tele seemed to be the standard for the next few years.
hope that helps in some way

I know he wrote Porch himself but he certainly didn't use to play guitar on it live until some years later. I'm wondering which show, or at least and approximate date, was the first to feature Ed on third guitar.
So we can assume Ed was playing guitar on stage by Dec '93, however it was on a Vitalogy track and all of those ALWAYS had Ed on guitar so it doesn't really count. I'm more interested in when he started playing on the material from Ten and Vs. that have Ed on guitar since the mid-90's.
Also, I've always wondered if that was a cause of friction between Stone and Ed at the time. I mean, Stone is the band's rythm guitarist and suddenly if Ed starts playing the rythm parts, what the hell is he meant to do?

I think that Eddie first started playing guitar for Pearl Jam when they were trying to rehearse BETTER MAN for the Vs sessions. They were never able to get a usable version when they tried to record it for Vs.
He always played on REARVIEWMIRROR and SMALL TOWN. He played on the original demos and was encouraged to continue to play by Stone and Mike. I think that Brendan O'Brien was the one who really supported the three guitar arrangements. The others have all commented that it was harder for him to play and sing in the early days, and he practiced a lot. But that when they are recording, the vocals are almost always overdubbed, even today, so he doesn't usually play and sing during recording sessions.
A lot of this information is available in scattered interviews, but there is a really good session guide that compiles a lot of it if you don't have it already:

I don't know if anyone has an interest, but I have a friend who is a ukelele player and collects uleleles. Ed's recent one looks really nice. My friend showed me where it came from. Here is a picture:
