Hello,

Does anybody know where I can download Patti Smith’s version of Alive? The one performed in Roskilde the year after the tragedy (don’t know if she’s played it other times). I remember having it from 5h but the file seem to have been removed now.

Thanks!

is it worth listening too? I have billy idol's greatest hits on right now and I'd hate to turn it off unless I was going to hear something really good

I hate to put down anyone singing/performing, whether it's a professional/non-professional, but that was just about the most hideous thing I've ever heard. A room full of drunken seniors could have done a better job. Sticking hot pokers in my ears would have been just as enjoyable. I feel so dirty now.

The sentiments behind it makes it really special. It was performed at the Roskilde festival in 2001, and (according to 5 horizons) a large section of the crowd at the front were moved by it and crying throughout. Patti was also tearful and couldn't bring herself to sing some parts (guitarist filled ni the spots).

In terms of does 'it sound good?' Umm, not really, it's typically Patti Smith, if you're a fan of her (which i am) you'll love it, and as i said, it's more so the sentiment that makes this cover so special, more than the musical performance.

i'll look for the 5 horizons link and post it in a bit...

it starts out a lil all over the place but kinda comes together towards the end.
But really, a drunk college girl at kareoke could have done a better job.

yeah it's not the greatest version of the song, but the sentiment and song choice is an amazing gesture.

I understand fully what you're saying. I really do, and it was a nice gesture. I'm just curious if the people were crying because of the circumstances surrounding it, or because it was so bad.

I was actually mad when they started it, because I knew one of my friends would have totally collapsed if she'd been there. I was made because she forced people to think about it, this way. And it was the shock of the surprise. And I cried. But it sounded so much different in reality than on that recording, much better, despite the wrong lyrics... And it was only later that I heard she was crying too. The whole concert was special. They started with covering The Rolling Stones This Could Be The Last Time.
It was like everybody that year was there to comfort us for 2000. The Cure played and even though nothing was said you could 'feel' they had it in mind the whole time, very emotional show. And Robbie Williams played on Friday, and it was rainy again. But ONE BIG PARTY :). That was another kind of magic happening there.
I don't know if it's on the recording, but what Patti Smith did was start a PEARL JAM PEARL JAM chant with the audience. That was great.
She rocks.

groetjes,
Mirella :) (going to my 13th Roskilde in a row this year, working for the festival now)

That Roskilde she played twice. The PJ cover was on the big stage. In a smaller tent she did a few Nirvana covers. That was beautiful!

groetjes,
Mirella :)

I like it. PJ never ended up playing Alive in Roskilde, which I always found to be depressingly appropriate.

Do you people need other people to tell you what is worth listening to or what is not?

I figure they probably would have played it. Wasn't the performance stopped when the people died?
