Oh Angus

It's pretty amazing. Not the highlight of the entire catalogue, probably top 10, but amazing nonetheless.

Wouldn't mind seeing a list of the top 10 PJ highlights. I think the Pilate couplet in the bridge/3rd verse is near if not in the top 5.

we may have a thread for that. But go ahead and make one. it'd be a good thread. Just be prepared for a merge if someone finds the old one.

odd, the pre-emptive merge warning makes me not feel hostility towards whomever does the merging around here...

Not sure if it's appropiate to dig up this thread, but I'm in a huge No Code period. Been listening to nothing else and have been closely revisiting this thread. However... I have problems to understand what Mankind does on the album. I don't see it fitting in the grand scheme of things. I wish Frank would explain. I'm sure he could. But I'm not getting it.

So bloody cruel and ironic (in a not funny way) he made it just to Present Tense. :|

i'd suspect that frank would much rather us bring this thread back and talk about it than not. But I've got nothing to say in defense of mankind :(

I think Mankind was Ed appeasing Stone and not much more that that.

Mankind ain't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I'd far rather have Black Red Yellow there in it's place.

I'm not interested to hear Mankind ain't that bad, folks. It AIN'T that bad. I would just like to know how it fits into the big scheme of characters throughout No Code. I wish Frank would have finished this. All the rest makes perfect sense in a way I've never felt the album before. The one piece I don't get fit into the puzzle is this song.

Honestly I don't think it fits. It was probably included for political/band harmony reasons. This is one of the reasons I think the yield-binaural run lacks strong thematic unity. Different authors coming from different places makes it harder to tell one unified story. It is less prevelant in No Code cuz it is just the one song, or on Riot Act where (except for get right) eddie at least edits the lyrics other people wrote.

Let's nog drag Yield into this conversation, stip. I won't... I can't listen to it till March anway.
But yes, Mankind doesn't fit. Too bad. The first 10 songs on No Code are pure brilliant. Now I see how they all connect, it seems even more brilliant than I ever thought it was. And you know I already rated the album highly. Always in my top-4, behind Yield. Fighting out the podium spots with Vitalogy & Binaural.

I'm glad this has been brough back up, I've been in a No Code kick lately too and a lot of Frank's words echo in my head as I listen to different parts.

My perspective on Hail, Hail has totally changed recently and I've been trying to put it into words recently but haven't been able to. Now that this thread has been revived I might work on what I want to say again.

This is really interesing. And truth. That is what mankind is doing there and that is all the direct sense of Yield. That is why Yield is so "warm" to me.In a good way.Is full of a sense of aceptation of the diferent and of the rest.Is the album were Ed "let go" and for me it works sooo fine. The album has not the beter songs but as an album is huge. The spirit of it,love it.

Does no one think that MANKIND kind of works as satire? The rest of the album is about self-examination while MANKIND is about crass commercialism.

Even as satire, it still should have its place on the album. In that meaning, I fail to see how it got on. Especially after the grande finale of the album that is Present Tense. It's like reaching the climax of the Godfather and then watching Mr Bean.

My main gripe with Mankind is it's placement on the record: sandwiched inbetween Present Tense and I'm Open - two songs which are made to segue. Mankind has a fun Supergrass/late brit-pop feel, and it's fun to boogie and sing along with. I think had the tracklisting been shuffled around dramatically it could definitely fit (sonically at least) if it was around Smile/Red Mosquito/Hail Hail.

This really is a great album although I might just think Red Mosquito is a definite 10 out of 10 song
