Not sure if it's appropiate to dig up this thread, but I'm in a huge No Code period. Been listening to nothing else and have been closely revisiting this thread. However... I have problems to understand what Mankind does on the album. I don't see it fitting in the grand scheme of things. I wish Frank would explain. I'm sure he could. But I'm not getting it.

i'd suspect that frank would much rather us bring this thread back and talk about it than not. But I've got nothing to say in defense of mankind

Honestly I don't think it fits. It was probably included for political/band harmony reasons. This is one of the reasons I think the yield-binaural run lacks strong thematic unity. Different authors coming from different places makes it harder to tell one unified story. It is less prevelant in No Code cuz it is just the one song, or on Riot Act where (except for get right) eddie at least edits the lyrics other people wrote.

This is really interesing.And truth.That is what mankind is doing there and that is all the direct sense of Yield.That is why Yield is so "warm" to me.In a good way.Is full of a sense of aceptation of the diferent and of the rest.Is the album were Ed "let go" and for me it works sooo fine.The album has not the beter songs but as an album is huge.The spirit of it,love it.

Does no one think that MANKIND kind of works as satire? The rest of the album is about self-examination while MANKIND is about crass commercialism.

Even as satire, it still should have its place on the album. In that meaning, I fail to see how it got on. Especially after the grande finale of the album that is Present Tense. It's like reaching the climax of the Godfather and then watching Mr Bean.
