around the bend.
parting ways.
long road.
parachutes.
man of the hour.
release.
cant keep.

its a trend ive noticed as of late. my all time favorite pearl jam songs are ballads or like little acoustic numbers or what have you. don't get me wrong, i'll jam out to blood or life wasted just as much as the other chap in the crowd...but the moments in the pearl jam catalogue that take my breath away and leave me stunned are the softer moments.

what about you guys?

i'd say for me it's mostly the midtempos or those on the slow side, like i am mine, lbc, release, around the bend, a lot of the same ones you listed, but i also love a couple of the faster ones just as much, like RVM(simply for the climax at the end) and Porch(same reason actually). Maybe Save You could be included there as well, although that might be slightly a notch below.

I've noticed this, too. I love a lot of the hard stuff, but when I make a best of type CD or a list of my favorite songs, there are more slower tunes than fast ones.

edit. and yet I don't love many of the slower tunes live.

i really love everything and anything.. it completely depends on my mood.
then again the songs that come up while playing any record or boot usually define my mood right there and then.
my brother is actually the one who loves all the "softer" ones... :P

I may have actually prefered the softer songs in the early years, or it was pretty evenly split. Indifference, small town, black, release, ledbetter, nothingman, betterman, immortality. Just a SICK run of amazing tracks. But right around No Code the ballads really started to drop off for me. There have been good ones, and even some great ones, but the only truly 5 star slow slong they've had for me post vitalogy is I Am Mine

I kinda feel the same way with SP.

I love the soft songs and the fast heavy ones too. The ones in between are mostly meh.

thanks--I was going to go back and check.

There have been some good slow songs post Vitalogy. long road, present tense, parting ways, wishlist, man of the hour, can't keep, parachutes, come back--probably sometimes, thumbing my way, and all or none too. And most of these are very good or near great, but something holds em back.

And then there is stuff like lowlight, thin air, off he goes, around the bend, of the girl that are just bland or downright bad. You never had that problem wtih the older slow songs

My list of favorite Pearl Jam songs would have more slow ones than fast.
I preferred the fast ones off of Ten & Vs when I started listening the band as a more than casual fan. My tastes must have started to mellow with Vitalogy, since then I have usually liked slow or mid-tempo songs the best. Other than a select few (Grievance, Save You) the true rockers just didn't grab me any more. Then Pearl Jam completely reveresed that.
