This was the last album I went out to get at midnight the night before the real release and spent half the night listening to. I was 20, so I guess I still had that combination of intensity of interest and absence of obligation.
I was pretty disappointed at first. The first three songs seemed not only to be totally lacking the great atmospherics of the single, but they didn't even seem like they belonged on the same record as it. Once that initial, now-typical Pearl Jam opening of "we have to show we still rawk" got out of the way, it started to win me over in force. And with time I'm grown to like all three of those songs, but I still don't like having the three of them packed in at the start of the record. It halfway feels like, when Evacuation ends, there's a sense of "Okay, now we can let the real record begin."
