All Night

got all night
plenty of time
take these chains
from my eyes
so alive
gettin 'it prime
take 'em there
before you die
why be satisfied
we've got all night
please be here
top of the stairs
no place for
the president
build some fears
left outside
fuck, be content
to just get by
why be satisfied
we've got all night
you scream and wail
you see who cares
scream and wail
see who cares
life has nothin' to do with
killin' time
so why be satisfied
we've got... all night
we've got all night
we've got all night

I remember the day I picked up my copy of 'Lost Dogs' and looked at the tracklist on the back on the CD. 'All Night', the words themselves stuck out to me because they seemed so different from titles Pearl Jam had chosen in the past for their songs (don't ask me why I thought this but I did). However, when I popped this baby into my stereo on the way home and heard the track that this odd new title represented, odd or not, I was second-guessing other songs I had chosen to possibly be my favorite PJ song.

This song is what Neil Young meant when he said that PJ is a band that knows when NOT to play. This is an example of a band riding a simple groove and having fun with it. But, even with the simplicity, the song is fantastic, with the mighty Jack Irons pounding the shit out of the snare, Stone & Mike's dual-rhythm guitar work (and Mike going apeshit with fills between the choruses), along with Jeff's skills, making the groove like molasses and Eddie appearing to be having a 'mindless good time' (the growling and howling around the 3 minute mark along w/ the last repeat of 'we've got ALL NIGHT!' going from soft to a heavy growl proves this) and experimenting with layered vocals to great avail, this song is definitely proof that even with being in the studio and being known as quite uptight, picky and meticulous with their song choices for albums and such, the band still has as much fun recording as they do playing live.

Fun is probably another reason why 'All Night' didn't make it onto 'No Code'. If 'All Night' had replaced 'Sometimes' as the introduction to the album, for me at least, the album's vibe would have changed completely, in fact, it probably would have made the CD slightly more accessible/mainstream which is far from what the band (especially Eddie) was going for at the time.

I give 'All Night' 5 stars because even though the song is not insanely deep (can't seem to decipher Eddie's lyrics very well as to what they mean so I could be wrong about that, at least lyric-wise)/challenging/thought provoking, it does pack a punch because of how fun it is. Pearl Jam's music is beautiful because it takes life and what we know about it (the challenges, the hard times, the need to grow/move on/be who we are) and brings it back to us to look at and admire and relate to. They show us in so many ways that just because we don't live life like someone else or a certain way doesn't mean we're getting it wrong. They're so good at showing us every aspect of being, why shouldn't they write a song that is simple and fun and encourages you to not give a fuck and just enjoy the moment?

Thanks to Stip for letting me do the write-up (sorry for getting it in later than I said I would) and I wanna dedicate it to the infamous Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, maybe he continue to rest in peace.

P.S. if someone could help me find out how I can change the font size on the title that'd be appreciated because I messed up somehow while doing it.

The little button that says edit post should pop up at the top right corner of the post you made. Press that, then highlight the block of text you want to resize, and choose the size you want from the font size bar.

I've done it for you anyway.

Even on Lost Dogs I mostly go straight to Sad. Not my cup of tea. It's not a bad song though. Just... it's not that special either.

I love all night. I only gave it 3 stars since it doesn't have much depth (in retrospect I should have given it 4) but as far as fun little rave ups go this is awesome. Everyone is having a great time and playing the shit out of their instruments, and the layered vocals work really well here. THis has no place on No Code but it is really too bad it took as long as Lost Dogs to see the light of day

I've never really sat down and tried to figure out the lyrics, but it seems pretty straightforward. You've got time, so don't settle and don't waste it

Nice write up satsumafutant :)

2 stars. Doesn't seem like much thought was put into the song. Seems more like a filler. Still catchy, but not a standout PJ song.

I think I'd rather listen to Sweet Lew, but I gave it 2 starts anyway.

I went with 2 stars. Mike's guitar saves the song. It sounds best when he first jumps in...i dig.

But otherwise a pretty boring tune.

Great song. heavy hitting, grooving, intense, beautiful, great melody, eds vocals are great. I really enjoy the layering of the song> Much different than what parl jam/ed typically go for.

If you would have put All night and Black Red yellow on no code instead of sometimes and mankind...No Code would have been one of their best. Not sure why.

Anyways, really like the mood the song captures. it blows my mind that they dont open shows with this tune "got all night...."

hits you right in the gut. I remember when i first poppe din the Lost Dogs cd in my car on the way home from a midnight sale i had to pull over and listen. hadn't been rocked like that, since it was after riot act, it was good to hear these pearl jam tracks. Then rigth into sad....

also, i love it right before mccreadys solo kicks in you can hear the feedback and the volume swelling up just before mike is let out of the cage with a face melting solo. Great.

I would defintiely hav prefered BRY or All night to mankind. Would have helped a lot.

I gave it 4 stars even though it's probably a 3 just because I like listening to this song more than some of the other average songs.

Nice write-up, dude. I give the song 4 stars; my favorite "new" song on Lost Dogs without a doubt. I love the groove and layered vocals. A few weeks after my brother got married, I made a mix CD themed around how much fun I had that weekend (a big part of which was my date and I in the hotel room after the reception). All Night was the first track on the CD.

One thing about the lyrics, though. I've always heard the line as "No place for the precedent," not "president." It makes more sense to me, but I could be wrong.

I'll never get sick of this song. Wouldn't work on No Code, but still a great song from those studio sessions.

I didn't care for it when LD first came out, but it's grown a lot on me and is now one of my favorites from that set.

No Code was a wierd fucking session.
