It's the first song off Avocado that clicked for me and I still love it. It's insanely catchy at times, but has also has a nice subversive quality given the topic. And the music drives and recedes very nicely, never going overboard in either direction until the end.

I couldn't agree more.

5 stars.

Marker in the Sand kicks ass. It's better in studio, though.

Hey, I haven't been here in a while. How's everybody doing?

I've always felt that the verses and choruses just don't quite fit together in this song...maybe it's not the musical arrangement as such, but the verses just have a really rugged edge to them which really contrasts that floating, poppy chorus. The lyrics are fairly strong though, and Ed's vocals sound pretty good. I think it's one of the stronger tracks on Avocado.

3.5 stars =o)

Good song. 3.5 stars rounded down to 3. Interesting subject matter...but a "tweener"...not a rocker, not a ballad.

Even Flow pwns.

This song is lyrically fantastic, musically solid. It would be among my favorite Pearl Jam songs, but the vocal harmonizing in the chorus bothers me. The low voice isn't quite on, and it makes the whole melody seem slightly flat next to the guitars. It's not actually flat, but it's a matter of mixing (and, possible, dubious EQing?).

5 stars for me, excellent song. one of the three or four songs off of Avocado that i actually really love. (together with Severed Hand and Army Reserve).
some of Ed's best writing, definitely. :)

i've never really understood the hype around this song. Musically it's kinda cool since its different than anything else they've done. Unlike most of you i find the lyrics to be kind of bland. I see what Eddie was trying to get at, but he kind of got there too easy almost. And the chorus is musically about the worst transition coming out of a verse ever in a Pearl Jam song.

 Up there with Pilate in that department, for sure.

I like the sentiment of the lyrics, but I think they're clumsy at times. The music feels a bit disjointed to me too. It was one of my least favorite tunes on teh new album when I first listened to it. I really dislike the music at teh end.

I honestly don't get the hype around this song. It's ambitious but it misses the mark. I think that Big Wave does a much better job of making a song about a deep philosophical idea.

3 stars

In my top 3 off of S/T along with Comatose and Parachutes. I'll write more about it later, but I love it. Not always in the right mood for it, but it's still a gem. 5 stars.

I didn't like MITS the first time I heard it, but the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me. Then I saw it live and something about the performance really grabbed me. Now it's one of my favorite PJ songs and sometimes I'll pop in S/T just to hear it. I can't sit still when it's on either, I end up dancing in my seat.

I really like the lyrics, but the best part of the song to me is the instumental bridge. :bammer: I especially love those drums.

My only 'complaint' is the intro of the song, it comes in so fast it seems like part of it is missing.

5 stars.

I don't know what to say about MITS that hasn't already been said here. I adore this song, most likely because Ed isn't really pointing fingers at a specific group of people, but at every-fucking-body, God included. Ed's lyrics blend anger and confusion extremely well, and the music is compelling, especially the jam at the end.

One complaint: in the lyric book to S/T, that musical coda is complemented with the phrase "Calling you out," referring to God. But there's no "you" in the recorded version. Why? It would have made it a much stronger line if Ed had simply sang that little word. Maybe he couldn't figure out how to sing it. Not a big gripe, but just a little glitch in what is ultimately a great song, at least for me. MITS --> Parachutes is a great, great segue and a fine example of how the proper tracklisting can really shine new light on an album and how we hear the tracks. My third favorite on S/T, and one of PJ's best political songs ever. Good stuff.

i see what you are saying, but i dont think those lines are specifically political...or maybe we have different meanings of what political songs are? either way, this song is awesome

5 Best song on Avacado (ok, maybe not the best, but up there). Love the chorus more than a year later. :D

i really really really want to hear them take out a jam at the end of this. a few minutes of mc cready and boom should be added live, if not to the record itself. that song ends before you want it to end.
