lol. jack irons gave the band Eddie and saved them from collapse.
If there was no Matt Cameron, there would be no demo tape to give to Jack Irons. Also, if Matt doesn't step in for the mentally unstable Jack Irons in 1998, Pearl Jam would have been fucked. Being the longest serving PJ drummer makes him the most important.
Jack is cool, but Matt is the man.
P.S. Each drummer in the history of the band has been important at different points.

I honestly don't buy the argument that if Matt hadn't been available in 1998 the band would've folded. There are tons of other great drummers out there that would have jumped at the chance to join Pearl Jam back then. Even today too. I'm happy they have Matt now, but they would've found a way to carry on back then even if he was never an option.

Given that Matt has been in the band since 1998 and is acknowledged by his band mates to be an incredible drummer and human being, i very much doubt that any other person could have had the same impact.
Matt and Jack both brought different things to the table and are probably the most important drummers in the history of the band, but Matt just shades it.

Saying Matt's the reason they had a demo tape to give to Eddie is absurd. He was just drumming on that demo as a favor. If he couldn't do that someone else would have.

And Chris Friel plays drums on some of those tracks anyway.

Of course it's not; that small favour to Jeff and Stone turned out be an important and intricate part of the story. It was fate.

Drumming talent matters not in these situations. Clearly it takes more than just talent to be a member of Pearl Jam and to make those wheels go round. To say that any drummer could have came in for the 98 tour and pearl jam would be fine is totally discrediting what the band is. Besides the fact that Cameron has the technical ability to learn 70 plus songs in less than three weeks, the fact that he was a friend of the band, familiar with the music and has the absolute most power and stamina was something nothing short of amazing. not to mention, clearly his personality fit with the band. Who knows what would have happened if a different drummer came in....
I think Matt saved the band just as much as Jack apparently did.

Without Matt we never would have got two great albums in Binaural and Riot Act and they wouldnt be playing the marathon shows they have over the last 10 years.

I'd describe Binaural and Riot Act as good or OK albums in context with the rest of the catalog. And then I'd argue that PJ's been playing marathon shows ever since their second record when they had the songs to do so. Lots of bands play the bare minimum, but PJ's always given fans their money's worth in lengthy shows ever since the Vs/Vitalogy era.

yeah MC was hired to enable them to continue to play these long shows, not to make them possible.

Matt is a great drummer and he's made the band push itself musically mostly for the better. having said that, he's not among my favourite drummers at all. this doesn't mean i'm hating on the guy - it's a matter of style and the fact that there are so many great musicians in the world. in fact, i don't think that any PJ member is in personnal pantheon, save for Eddie.
