Firstly, there are no other bands. Really. And so long as there is just one band, it's worth thinking and talking about what PJ's best albums and songs are. And not just because, well, I think Hail Hail is the best song because I really really like it. Baseball owners and managers and scouts used that kind of gut instinct to select and draft and sign players. Now they rely on complex stats which have often revealed that their gut instincts were completely wrong.
The cool people over at http://www.TwoFeetThick.com have posted an article which analyzes all PJ songs and albums in a statistical framework using data from the setlist archive and the March Madness tourney results (which, sadly, look like it won't happen this year) and comes to some interesting conclusions that might not jive with what you think. Check it out and tell me what you think (greger.larson@gmail.com).

impresive. I don't have time to really read all that right now but I'm gonna try and get to it later.

I totally forgot about the march madness. Is there interest in running the survivor tournament again instead?

Wow, this is amazing. It's sort of an interesting companion piece to the PJ vs. BJ comparison. It looks at the tastes of PJ fans within the sphere of PJ's music. I wonder what such an analysis of BJ's music would look like. I think that Isaac Turner should undertake that one and give us a detailed comparison of the two analyses.
Seriously, though, this is interesting, and thanks for posting it.

That was nuts. I really hope that was for a term paper or thesis or something.
Very cool that we now have a statistical analysis of the best Pearl Jam albums. Wouldn't a giant poll have accomplished the same results?
Adjusted: 1. Ten 2. Vitalogy 3. Vs. 4. No Code/Yield (tie) 6. S/T 7. Binaural 8. Riot Act
p.s. This explains alot: About Greger Larson: Greger's friends say that Greger knows more about Pearl Jam than is healthy in an otherwise well-adjusted adult. They are probably right. Though he would love to have carved out a career doing something explicitly Pearl Jam related, he's instead fallen back on his other interests for a steady income. Greger got his PhD in Zoology in 2006 working on domestication using modern and ancient DNA, and as a result he's spent a lot of time working with statistics he doesn't completely understand while building evolutionary trees depicting the relationships of pigs and chickens and cows. Greger likes looking at things in different ways and so he was very excited when he hit upon the idea of combining his analytical skills with his Pearl Jam passion. He currently lives in Uppsala, Sweden but will be moving to Durham, UK by year's end.
