I recently met this really beautiful girl who grew up in Brooklyn and now lives in a suburb outside of Reading, PA. Her friends were calling her "Brooklyn" and I was wondering where she got her nickname from, and we started to get along well as we discussed the similarities in our upbringings.

Anyway, we exchanged numbers, so I called her last night. I don't know her too well, so I'm trying to find common interests, so we start talking about music. We discover that we both play guitar, and she talks about how much she likes The Beatles. She mentions her interest in classic rock is largely due to the fact that her dad opened for Jimi Hendrix back in the day and continues to play shows. So she mentions how she likes all kinds of music from pop, to hip hop, to celtic and she even mentions Nirvana as one of her favorites. Naturally I gotta know..."do you like Pearl Jam?" Her response was "I don't think I've ever heard of them."

I was stunned. She is 18 years old. After explaining her interest in music to me, I was very perplexed. "You've never heard of them?" I add. "Ed Vedder...the mumbly singer guy?" I half-ass sing the chorus to Jeremy and she still doesn't have a clue.

Now, I can understand if someone has never heard of Pearl Jam. But after explaining all of that stuff to me, particularly that she likes Nirvana a lot, I was deeply confused.

Has anyone else run into a similar situation?

On top of this, she grew up in Brooklyn and never heard of The Wu-Tang Clan. Haha...what the fuck?

I personally think that people who have never heard of Pearl Jam should be avoided and, where that is not possible, at the least ignored.

Dude, don't look at this as a bad thing, because this is a golden opportunity. Think about it, all you have to do is get this girl in a situation where you can play her a song you just wrote. Then just play her Last Kiss and you'll be balls deep in her poop chute in no time.

i agree its strange for someone who is a music fan to have never heard of them, especially at 18, but knowing nirvana and not pearl jam isnt that surprising.

i was substitute teaching 8th grade last year and they had no work, so we were talking about music. just about every kid in the room knew who nirvana was and only 1 or 2 had ever heard of pearl jam

I reckon that if I was a teacher that I would give out PJ CDR aud bootlegs as incentive prizes to the kids. Costs fuck-all, increases self-esteem, and has the benefit of (as it is written)'spreading the jam' (hallelujah!) and passing on some of the best tunes of all time.

Ed doesn't say "Fuck" that much, and the songs would certainly connect with a percentage of kids.

(Not that I advocate "pushing" of anysort of addictive substance)

This thread brings on a much larger issue....is Pearl Jam significantly less popular than we realize?
