have a musician friend whose a jazz guitar major and embodies all the pretentious snobbery that comes along with it....alas, he's a good guy and i've been saying for years that i'd make him a pj mix....he respects the band, pretty much based on the fact that i'm so into them, but i've never been able to get him to really come around....his sound is miles davis/john scofield to phish and early chilli peppers, with some hip hop and beatles/dylan thrown in....i'm looking for tracks that have that certain "different" quality for pj, that'll hopefully grab his attention....looking for 15, so far i i've got...
1. down 2. undone 3. education 4. drifting 5. black, red, yellow 6. in my tree 7. dirty frank 8. no way 9. marker in the sand 10. come back (somewhere toward the end of the mix)
thoughts?....

I'd second Parachutes and Grievance among others that have been said. Maybe Insignifance too.
I'd slip these songs in as great pieces that show off all aspects of PJ:
In My Tree Present Tense Given To Fly Sleight Of Hand Sad
Looking at your list, i'd maybe consider dropping Black, Red, Yellow and No Way...i love the bridge in No Way, but the rest of the song is just...nothing. BRY is kinda good fun, but there are much more essential songs (and i don't see how it'd fit in with the music your friend's into).

some good suggestions here.

BYR - i think he'll dig the jam-out in the middle and the rodman element...he's a big bball fan.... No Way - think he'll dig how the song builds on itself and just the weirdness of it all...
not necessarily looking for the "essentials", but the tracks that would be interesting to a very critical and judgemental listener....haha...

6 of the first 7 songs on your list are on Lost Dogs. So it looks like you're going for lesser known b-sides that will appeal to the critical ear of your musician friend. There are many good song suggestions on here, you have a lot of work to do!
Of the Girl Corduroy Down Undone Education In Hiding Parachutes Driftin' Red Mosquito No Way Black, Red, Yellow Dirty Frank In My Tree Marker in the Sand Come Back Free Jazz

sorry man, but i fail to see how a jazz enthusiast would be thrilled by those songs - now i don't know your friend at all but chances are he'll be rolling his eyes at these tunes if he's a musical snub. at the moment the guitar solo in come back kicks in, he'll be laughing at this band forever. except for come back i'm not saying those aren't good songs at all but i thought this kind of person would like to hear something more challenging musically. just my opinion btw.

i get where you're coming from....he's not purely a jazz elitist....and he knows a lot of pearl jam, most of the hits and the early albums, and yield has been played many times in his presence....as far as rock/pop, he likes melody and "catchy" tunes and has an appreciation for simple arrangements and whatnot....i do know he's not a fan of the darker/punkier/brooding aspects of the band....he's told me he enjoys most of their "slower" tunes, so i'm looking for more upbeat tracks that'll hold his interest.....
i think he'll dig the almost gentle r&b vibe of comeback.....what would you suggest as a closer/additions?
