That would not be good, regardless of which songs they picked.

I disagree entirely. cover albums are often fun, especially if done well, and they are historically a very good cover band that treats their idols with a lot of respect (all along the watchtower to the contrary). And their covers are often the highlight of a show

If they did release one I'd want to see it either immediately following or followed by another record, just so it doesn't look like a cash cow kind of ploy

I've started working on my 80s compilation and so I've been listening to a lot of 80s pop hits this past week, and a lot of these are very cheesy songs, but even when they are there is still something kind of compelling about them. Not that they were hits, but that they were hits that have survived long enough to become part of our collective heritage. They are songs i probably would have despised at the time if I had the tastes I do now, but now really enjoy hearing becuase they are part of that past, something all of us share.

And so whenever a band I respect wants to pay tribute to that heritiage I'd support it.

(assuming the songs are good)

Marriage has not been good to your faculties. Cover albums suck. Name one good cover album. It would suck even more for Pearl Jam as they were never, not even for one show, a bar band.

Cover albums are like transvestites, all glitter on the outside and not the real deal when you get 'em home. If Ronaldo posted on this board he'd agree with this whole heartedly.

Even live, where PJ may do justice to a lot of the covers they do, I have almost always left feeling that there were PJ songs I would have rather heard instead.

mark lanegan's "I'll take care of you"

as far as whether i'd rather here a PJ song instead of a cover it depends totally on the cover. For sure there are ones i wish they'd drop out of their repitoire, but any show that has them covering Baba, for instance, is a better show for it, and I really wish I could have seen a harvest moon.

And the studio covers they've done have always been excellent. Crazy Mary, Last Kiss, Leaving Here, Love Reign all come to mind.

Now would I want this in lieu of an album of real material--absolutley not. But as a 'bridge' record between albums I bet it would be a lot of fun.

Did you just use the phrase "I bet it would be a lot of fun" when refering to a possible album by Pearl Jam.

It's the only time I've ever heard Sleater Kinney be anything close to listenable. I never knew they could before seeing this a few times. I thought they could only do migraine inducing screeching, hunger strike as evidence of that.

angus had a better sept 2005 than I did. I don't remember what I did, but it did not invovle 4 harvest moons

Tyler--I agree

And yeah--I think fun is the right word to use. Actually I suppose that it depends on the songs chosen.

Hunger Strike is not a good song. Everything S-K has written is.

I dunno, it could be good. They have certainly done some great covers, Sonic Reducer, Love Reign O'er Me and Crazy Mary jump immediately to mind. I have no desire for them to release one but something through the ten club, a collection of the ones they have done over the years could be ok. I don't really like the thought of them going into the studio and recording a dozen covers.

I agree with Angus that they definitely play too many covers live. I wouldn't want them to drop the covers, it can definitely make a show special but less covers and some new covers wouldn't go amiss. I'd hate for one of their albums to have a cover on it. When they release a new album I want it to be PJ originals.

The Little Wing from 95 that goes into Maggot Brain is something else.

I agree that i wouldn't want to see the band go into a studio and record 12 covers...a collection could be ok...i just don't reeeeally see the point. There's much more to the band than that, and we all have our versions (/favourite live versions) of each cover anyway.

This is actually one the things I would enjoy most seeing.

1] A digital remix of Ten
2] A covers album
3] A new album by 2009

I'd buy it if they did one.
