Gremmie Out of Control

Every beach has a clown who thinks he knows it all.
Hang-ten outta Santa Fe when surf comes out tomorrow lets go!
And he's always practicing his cowabunga call.
Cowabunga!
But the menace scrambles when the big waves start to roll.
'Cuse there's nothing worse then a gremmie out of control.

Gremmie out of control.
Gremmie out of control.
There's nothing worse then a gremmie out of control.

The kids all know that a gremmie's talk is cheep.
Ride the Hula-Han over the pipeline bonsai to the saddle bowl.
So they just try to ignore this ugly creep.
Cowabunga!
His board is always full of dings 'cause he's always doing stupid things.
And there's nothing worse then a gremmie out of control.

Gremmie out of control.
Gremmie out of control.
There's nothing worse then a gremmie out of control...

My intial reaction to GOOC was disappointment, and I think it's colored my reaction to the song ever since. When I picked up the Music for our Ocean Mother CD I was really hoping for a new song (this is pre internet news so you tended to know very little upon first listen) and isntead I got this surf cover. I thought the music was kind of cool, but I didn't like the way Eddie's vocals sounded (still don't) and I thought Pearl Jam was too serious a band to really pull off a jokey song like this (they're better at it now but still not great).

These days I can appreciate it more for what it is. I do like Stone's (I think it's stone) Cowabunga :), and its an interesting change of pace I suppose. But GOOC never gets listened to unless I have lost dogs on and I'm not skipping through tracks. This is truly one of the most disposable songs in their catalgoue--for me at least

2 stars--reasonably well executed but I care nothing for the finished product. I'd rather hear big wave

The four star choice should be "Pipeline Bonsai to the Saddle Bowl".

I think this song is a lot of fun, and Brendan O'Brien's guitar work on the song is exceptional, but it is what it is, and I can't give it more than 3 stars in good conscience.

I know it's a cover of a surf song and Ed likes to surf. But I hate it and it's one of the few songs they've formally released that is in my cellar. Haven't listened to it in years and have no plans to do so. It's sole saving grace is that it is a joke song and hard to take seriously.

I just listened to this song, because I could not remember what it sounded like. It was actually better than I expected but it is still easily forgettable, I can only give it two stars. As far as surf songs go Big Wave is better.

4 stars for several reasons.

It is a fun/joke tune. It couldn't have been released in a better way. I think it fit perfectly on the MOM soundtrack with a lot of other great bands' covers and b-sides. (For instance, putting Soundgarden's "My Wave" was dumb in my opinion)

Anyway, it fits great. If I was not a PJ fan or unfamiliar, it helps me enjoy PJ, an easy intro to the band, and a great surf tune. Pearl Jam fans can like it because it's not on a normal album release, again, it's a fun song, and shows a different side of the band...especially at that time.

What I'm getting at: if picked up MOM1 and saw PJ on the list, I'd be pleased with Gremmie. But if I got MOM3, and saw PJ on the list, I would not be pleased with Whale Song. (I like Whale Song, but it would be a disappointment)
