I've been thinking about why this song was included on Vitalogy. It's about lurve and trying to stay faithful and all that (which should ensure it's position on an album about, erm, "life" - even the fucked up existence Vedder foisted upon us) BUT it's completely fucking bonkers. It sounds rough (the odd background mumble; "In Love!" being shouted once too often - see the weirdness thread, damn you!; Mike's guitar squealing like a scalded cat; the, uh, melotrone [if I'm assuming that's what it is near the end]), the person drumming aint even the drummer for this album (was Mr. Shoaf part of a healthy stomach? Nah) and the lyrics.... Well, they're very flippant and, by the Gods, amusing. Pearl Jam generally don't do comedy, especially back then. Sucking dick on an album about Christ and Mohammed? Really?
So... was it a token peace offering to Stone? He's your one song and don't break up the band kinda thing? It forms a nice symmetry with Jeffy's earlier on, and both break up a fairly Vedder-dominated album. What say you?

i think it fits perfectly, both musically and lyrically. my favorite things about this song are precisely the i-don't-care attitude of the delivery and the drummer "stunned" by the Satan's dick line, where he almost misses the next punch (this kind of thing just can't be recreated twice and sound as funny). i think the theme of SB isn't less serious than the rest of Vitalogy; the tone of the lyrics just add another facet to Ed's then-monolithic seriousness.

so bugs isn't "weird" and "out of place", but satan's bed is? i like both songs, don't get me wrong, but an accordion song is a lot less commonplace on a rock record than the type of song satan's bed is

He doesn't actually stop. The drum track has been faded or punched out, then brought back in. Listen to the cymbals. They are in mid-crash when the drums come back in.

I always thought Ed was referring to the boxer on that line...
Agreed with wtfisaledbetter? for Satan's Bed fitting perfectly on Vitalogy; very dark and angry album it is. Even though it's not my favorite album but overall it had the best lyrics Eddie's written in my opinion.

yeah, "like muhammad hits the truth" always seemed like a referrence to ali.
that never occured to me. Still don't like the lyric with either muhammed though
