Rules of the tournament

Songs can be full band numbers, you accompanied on piano, guitar, drums, a capella, or even just instrumental. However you choose to interpret them

Eligible songs include everything in pearl jam's catalogue, anything from into the wild, and any live cover the band has played live at least 5 times. If you have questions just ask me.

The day before your match is up please pm me a link to your song. I will post it on the tournament ftp server. Afterwards it will be archived--see above for the link and thanks jblagg (and cono for providing the base server)

Voting generally lasts two days. the first 4 matches will have four songs each and you will vote for two.

This is a double elimination tournament. Voting is done in the thread, not via poll.

If you win all your matches you will need 5 songs. If you lose in the first round and go on to win you will need 8.

Nice start to the tournament

Bada--interesting slowed down take on rise. Rather than the optimistic sieze the day vibe of the original you gave it an old man reflecting back on his life feel to it. I like the layering the verses too. Strong number

Jimx6--very faithful straightforward cover. Very 94/95 era vocals. I felt like I could have been listening to a bootleg from that period.

Windedsailor--I've always liked the bright eyes meets beck meets the violent femmes vibe to the stuff I've heard you do. I'm not sure this one worked as well as some of your other numbers though. I think it is too long a song for your style, and you were a little too subdued in the verses so that it felt a bit like there was dead space in the song. Very impressive screaming at the end :)

I liked all three of these, but my two votes are for bada and jimx

Jimx6 & Windwdsailor....I'm right in line with Stip's breakdown of your songs...both were great...I won't vote since I'm going against you guys...

All three were pretty good..each with their strong points.

I like how bada and mikey reworked Rise...very strong bada influence on this one. Nice work

Jim... Very true to the original. Nice Ed vocals. Like stip said...brought me back to some old boots.

Windedsailor... I wasn't real big on the vocals for the most part, but that scream made up for it. You got some lungs..thats for sure.

I think I'll give them a few more listens and vote in a bit

ahhhhh, so nice to be back...

Bada - nice, solid cover...I can't wait to hear some of the work you've done w/ Mikey

Jim - like the others have said, sounded a lot like the Vitalogy era boots...nice job with the production, I can never get the full band sound going, and have all but abandoned efforts. I thought the end faded out a bit quickly, but that's only cause I was ready for that solo to rock my shit after the rest of the song...

windedsailor - definitely brought a different sound to the table, which is always nice...I second the bright eyes, etc. vibe that Stip brought up. My biggest criticism is that the volume seemed way off throughout. I'm on my work computer, which isn't so great, but I had to turn the speakers all the way up just to hear the verses, and then the chorus almost blew them out...

My votes go to Bada and Jim...

Stip, I'll put these on the archives site tonight and post the link...

I like the simplistic take on I Got Shit with just a voice and an acoustic, but Jimx has a killer growl and good production. Likewise, Badabing did a cool job with Rise.

I vote for Jimx and Bada.

I'm gonna go for Bada and Jim.

I really liked the production and layering on Bada's, and it's good to see people taking the song in a (slightly) differend direction. Jim, that was a good faithfull cover, pretty strong all around.

Winded Sailor, i was a big fan of your stuff in the originals contest, so i feel bad for not voting for you here. I think you were just slightly edged out in this round, i'm still looking forward to your second entry and hopefully you'll get the chance to do a few more too.

Good to see this competition back =)

Bada
Winded

Bada...as tight and sparse and honest as the original is, you captured a spirit it lacks. A little more mournful. Dig it.

Winded...reminded me of the Nirvana's Fecal Matter demo version of "Spank Thru"...obviously, the production here wasn't up to the other two entries, but the spirit here was original. And from what I know of the song, it's maybe a bit more fitting than the way we're used to it sung. We know these songs by rote, most of them, and I think I'll vote 'interesting' over 'precise' in this thing.

Jim...decent sound, and especially good at the "my friends" part...sounds kind of ominous there. It was a tough call, but my votes went to the other two for their further explorations into the songs. But that does not diminish your solid performance here.

All three:

glad to see this thing up and running...

great job to all. it's a tough call.... i hear what others are saying about the volume on windeds, but the idea of doing it a bit different than the original is nice. bada/mikey not sure i liked the slowed down rise. great production and playing of course. jim really ripped that solo on NFY...

i'm going winded and jim.
