I was thinking the other day about how little I really check the GPJC forum. It's partly because all of the posts are overwhelming, and partly because I really have nothing pressing to discuss regarding pearl jam. I simply don't listen to them that much anymore.

Then I was thinking about why this was: When I first joined, I was starved for some place to discuss my favorite band. I don't remember how much I posted, but i remember lurking a hwell of a lot. I would rabidly read the setlist threads, and I was genuinel addicted to news about pearl jam. After a while it got old, and I felt extremely burnt out on this band. I never fully recovered I guess.

I often wonder how differently I would feel about the self-titled album if this board didn't exist. I was psychologically predisposed to not really like it, given that there was so much wankery going on about it and pearl jam at the time here on the board. The amount of time I spent listening to recommendations in OB played a factor, too. There was a paradigm shift in my musical landscape, and I am now clearly headed towards pure indie oblivion. That, too, might not have happened if RM didn't exist.

Does anyone have anything to add to this?

so if I understand you well, the conclusion is: your landscape got wider. Less Pearl Jam, more other stuff. Thumbs up for RM then

Same goes for me though. Except that I thought I'd really like Avocado. A blow which I'm still recovering from.

Pretty much, yeah. No matter what, I'm sure I would have burned out of Pearl Jam eventually. It was with RM's help that I discovered virtually anything having to do with music online. pitchfork, metacritic, allmusic, etc. I predict that without RM, I would have inevitably went from Pearl Jam backwards, completely stuck in the 60's (not that the 60's didn't offer great music.)

I pretty much can't listen to Pearl Jam now without thinking about Red Mosquito. While I love all of you, I don't consider that a healthy thing in my life.

I'd probably explain it differently but yes; big time.

The s/t did suck but its hard for me to listen to any pj anymore

I don't know, maybe it just had it's time with me, it kinda feels self important in a lame way sometimes. But other music I've listened to in the past has been the same way and I can still listen to it occasionally.

Yanno s/t was just so fucking lame, if they would have continued along an honest path I'd still respect them, but again other bands I've like have made lame records maybe not as bad as this but I forgive them.

The intimate relationship with this board makes me stray and I can't really explain it. In hindsight I can't really deny the records yield binaural and riot act.

I think all of us here have listend to pearl jam, more than listened to pearl jam for a very long time. I think anyone denying at least an obsession, healthy or unhealthy, is full of it. But a lot of us grew up with pearl jam, mayh ave been the first real band we got into, following their every move...

So yea...a few things. you will get burnt out. There is plenty, fucking, thousands of great bands out there to find and put your effort and soul into...

And pearl jam, being that youve been a part of them for so long, probably wont give you the same feeling as it did when you were younger. Like maybe your wife did the first year or two you dated. There will be moments, but probably nothing like that. I connect pearl jam to my youth, well i guess i am 27 still...) so im not going to be hanging up pearl jam pictures on my locker. I go se shows cause i have tons of friends, and have a ton of fun, but i dont think ill ever get the feeling i did the first 8 shows or so i saw them. I dont blame the band, i blame me.....ive seen them too much, listened too much, become too emotionally invested in them over the years.

I rather see other bands in smaller clubs because...thats just way cooler....and the bands are more fresh to me...like new hot young pussy perhaps..

Or im just ramling.

Hmmm... well, I listened to Pearl Jam for maybe a year or almost before I joined here. I got most of the music during that time and I did enjoy it. While waiting for the new album I was checking online as everyone was left in the dark until about two months before the scheduled release. Naturally, I checked synergy first and I thought the bunch there were a bunch of douches.

One thing I did learn from synergy was of a dark place called RM. The way they talked about RM made it sound like it was the /b/ of the pearl jam community. It caught my interest and I started posting here, well in GD anyway (after lurking for a bit). I soon found that posting here was actually more exciting than the dreadfulness of listening to ST.

I believe I would have lost interest in Pearl Jam after ST regardless of the board. I do believe there may be a few bands I have started listening to as a result of OB. On the other hand, there are probably more bands that I refuse to listen to as a result of reading OB.

Well, I pretty much lost my interest after a listening to Riot Act a few times. I did lurk around for new album info here and there, and also picked up both Lost Dogs and Avocado on their first day of release but that's about it.

The only thing that's really keeping me interested with the band is through their live shows and bootlegs. I hated S/T until this past June tour and started liking a lot of the tracks off that album. Still sub-par compared to their first 5 albums. Binaural is a pretty good record of its own way.

As far as the studio releases, I just don't think they can top their first 5 albums. I still got a lot of bootlegs to discovery so they're still in my interest.

i would say im more of a music snob in general because of RM. that is mainly because of all the great new music i have discovered in my 4 years here that most people i meet have never heard of. from time to time, i get bored with pearl jam but after a while it becomes fresh again.

Most importantly so!!

Besides that;
Coming here and on synergy made me realise you can get stuck way to deep in the addiction (for example; trying to get your hands on everything the band has put out there). I cant keep up with you folks, all the stuff you know about them and all those boots, and just have decided not to even try.
I just enjoy the stuff that I occasionally discover and that keeps it fresh for me.

And I have discovered that this place makes me laugh a lot, so thats good for my health too.

RM didn't alter my opinion of Pearl Jam, but it made me want to write about it. It also made me want to write about other music as well. In fact it made want to write about all sorts of things that I've never written about before.

For me that was a good thing. For readers of the forum, except stip, who seems to enjoy reading my posts, probably a bad thing.

Like the general sentiment of others I'm more excited about the band when they're on the road or as a new record is coming out. I still listen to them fairly often, mostly boots, but my interest with them does ebb and flow.
Now? I'm more likely to read through the Sports, A&E and N&D discussion threads on the board.

I don't think so. Its made me run and listen to albums with different perspectives at times but other than that my opinions and enjoyment were never affected. Well, I like Ten less. But that's probably because I'm not 13 anymore.

Lurking the other bands has given me a few bands that I wouldn't have gone out of my way to listen to, though.

RM just made me realize that I dislike internet personalities more and more. Some people are just so fake here, it's unbelievable. I like this place in doses, but some personalities are just lame on this thing. I'll always love pearl jam incredibly.
