So I managed to acquire a copy of the 12" Go Single (with Animal Live on cassette!) and I was listening to the B side, Elderly Woman..Small Town, and I noticed then just after 'Memories like fingerprints are slowly raising' Eddie sings 'Of course you can't see me' instead of 'Me, you wouldn't recall'.

Anyone else noticed this before? To my ears there's no percussion, bass etc on the song so I assume it's Eddie's demo version. The included version of Alone is also kick ass :D

It's listed on my version of the CD single as "[Acoustic Version]". No percussion, sounds like just one acoustic guitar, and the different lyric you mention.

I don't know if I would call it a demo per se, because its a very polished recording and almost sounds as if they just edited out the other instruments.

The Go single was actually released before VS hit stores so that is the first version I ever heard. I noticed the slight lyric change when I got the album and think the lyrics on the album version fit better.

I'm glad "of course you can't see me" was changed to "me you wouldn't recall." It flows better.

agreed. I actually don't like that demo version that much. The take on Vs is THE definitive version of small town for me. They've never matched it

Yes, the version of "Alone" on the Go single absolutely blows Lost Dogs out of the water. EV's vocals on that one are a big example of what made me fall n love with Pearl Jam in the first place.

Funnily enough, the Go single was one of my first Pearl Jam cd's. Normally people start with Ten or Vs., but I think the first three pearl jam things I bought were Vitalogy, Merkinball and Go.

the 'i just want to scream hello' part is always a highlight, as is the sing along at the end, but that's more the shared expereince than the song itself

I really don't care for the arrangement of it the band plays now. I much prefer the 93-94 vintage. ( Plus, neither Jack nor Matt really hit the vibe of the song right to my ears.)

Well, for starters, the way they end it. The whole band now comes in in the second verse rather than in chorus 1. And the " 1-2-3, 4-2-3" count-off. I much prefer Eddie starting the song by himself on vocals and guitar.

Anyone know where I can get my hands on the version of Alone from the Go single??

Also I actually prefer the acoustic version (definately not a demo) but then again i like most songs better in acoustic.

The lyric change in Small Town reminds me of the minor change of "Avalanche falling fast" in the alternate take of Who You Are.

The difference is very slight, but it was obviously nagging enough to Eddie to make him want to come up with something a little smoother. Again, I think that in both instances the better set of lyrics made the final cut for the albums.

Oh, and where the hell is there an alternate take of "Who You Are"?
