Its a great record...it would benefit from a better mix and production, but is really good. For me:
Life wasted: a great song..the bridge is awesome, the solo at the end is great, the lyrics are one of the best things ed has written.
WWS: great song, great lyrics....i was burned out when they used to play it on every show in 06 but right now, i liked it more.
Comatose: fuck yes!! at the time it was the proof they were still rocking, after a whole record without a song with this impact, comatose was awesome...Mike shines here.
Severed Hand: Another classic for me...the jam at the middle, the bridge...eddie´s vocals are great.
Marker: the first flawed song from this album...it could have been an amazing one, the last part seems great...but the chrous isnt as big as the song needs, the overlayed vocals dont work here...Matt does a great worj though.
Parachutes: great song too..maybe the vocals here arent as good as they need...the lyrics are great.
Unemployable : Matt cameron.
Big Wave: well the lyrics arent good, but the music? great...stone and mike shines and the end is amazing.
Gone: i loved it when it first came out, specially compared with the demo...but actually is just an ok song. It would have been better as a b side.
Wasted reprise: nice idea..and live it is cool too.
Army reserve: fucking groove back. Thanks Jeff.
Come back: i loved it at first, it felt like one of those crossover songs kinda like better man...but after a while is just a good song. Good lyrics.
Inside Job: hell i love it. Even the lyrics....the music is awesome.

Still my least-favorite PJ record, and "Life Wasted" is in the running for my least favorite Pearl Jam song... but damn am I in love with "Parachutes".

Songs I'm still fairly fond of: Life Wasted (even if just for the bridge), WWS, Severed Hand, Marker, Parachutes, Inside Job (musically, the lyrics are bad), and Gone.
That makes this album a fairly good attempt, for me, except for some truly awful moments which bring it below Backspacer for worst album. Backspacer is an entertaining listen throughout. I'll take that over a spotty album, especially one with Big Wave on it.

Still my second least favourite Pearl Jam album, but I really love Parachutes, Unemployable, Comatose and Big Wave. Not crazy about Inside Job or Come Back. The rest aren't quite my thing but they don't make me cringe either.
I'll take an album with a few really high points and a few misfires over an album that's consistently okay. If Backspacer had even a small handful of songs I really loved, even if I thought the rest were awful, I'd probably look a lot more fondly on it.

I'm not listening to PJ much these days, but when I do Life Wasted, WWS, Comatose, and Parachutes are among the songs I most want to hear.

I'm with you bud. LIfe Wasted, WWS, Severed Hand, Marker, for me ar killer rockers. I'm really into Big Wave and Gone latelly, like I said. Come Back is one of my favorite PJ songs, and I find myself listening to it very often. Unemployable, Army Reserve and Inside Job are awesome too. I just not THAT found with Comatose and Parachutes, even though, both are better than most of "bad moments" on other PJ albuns... (Like Leash or Green Disease for example... I just can't stand those songs...)
S/T is about 1000X better then Backspacer too.
This.
I had a tough time voting b/c Parachutes, Marker, and Severed Hand are all top notch. And seeing how ballistic crowds go for Comotose has made me re-listen to it and ultimately come to put it almost on the same level. WWS, LW, Army Reserve and Inside Job are all superior. A really strong album, and aging very, very well.

I think this album is done quite a disservice by Kasper's mixes - they've always struck me as kind of flat and undynamic (in the sense of depth, light and shade, etc.)
It'd be interesting to see what someone like Andy Wallace or Alan Moulder could do with those tracks.

I don't think it's great, but I do think it's good.
That sounds an awful lot like I'm damning it with faint praise, and I suppose I am, but I think the material is stronger and more well-written than Backspacer (if let down by poor production choices).
If it sounded as warm and rich as Riot Act, I don't think it would be seen as quite the noticeable a step down in quality as it (sometimes) is now. I don't know if there's a huge chasm in songwriting quality between the two; there's definitely some poorly written stuff on Riot Act that I tend to forgive because the good bits are so satisfying and it sounds so good.
