I tried to listen to this album yet again the other day. Yet again I got about halfway and got bored. It's so front-loaded.

How many copies of Avocado did you end up giving away?

Some of the tracks early on are among the most Stonesesque they've ever been. But, as Keith would say, they rock but never roll. It's too much punching going on in a row. Needs a No Expectations, or a Shake Your Hips, or something. That "who says we're old look how long we can rock out before our tinnitus acts up" shit they've been pulling is just a terrible way to make a record.

I've said it many times before, but I suppose I'll say it again. I love the collection of songs and I tend to go back to listen to this album fairly often. The production is clearly an issue but the songs are strong. I love Army Reserve, Severed Hand, Marker, and Unemployable.

Life wasted, WWS, Comatose, SH, Parachutes, Unemployable, BW, AR, and IJ are amongst the best work of this band.

I for the life of me can't think of what two songs these could be.

would you have been more likely to figure it out if they were not followed by the 'best work of the band' comment?

The first half of this album remains one of my very favorite stretches in the catalog, and was such a welcome breath of fresh air for me after how subdued a record Riot Act was. Unfortunately such an immediate response to the previous album doesn't necessarily lend itself to aging well in absolute terms--Riot Act needed that response at that moment in time, but the catalog as a whole doesn't--but it was fantastic at the time. In that respect S/T is one of their most dated albums for me.
