Seriously when was the last time you heard a song from Binaural on the radio, for me it was 2000 and I have some pretty good Pearl Jam friendly stations (93.3 WMMR) that I listen to. What you hear most on the radio no matter where in the country you are is "Even Flow", "Jeremy", "Alive", "Daughter", "Corduroy", "Betterman" and sometimes "Given to Fly".
Those songs are from Ten, Vs, Vitalogy and Yield. Not only are those the only songs you hear in steady radio rotation from Pearl Jam, but they are also the best selling Pearl Jam albums.
A Pearl Jam fan claiming "Binaural" is better than "Ten", "Vs." "Vitalogy" , "No Code" or "Yield" is like a Led Zeppelin claiming "Coda" is better than "Zeppelin IV", "Zeppelin II" , "Zeppelin I" and "Houses of the Holy".
So, are you saying that people who like Binaural better than Ten are posers ? Stupid ? Wrong ? Be reassured, you're definitely a prick.

This was a well thought out and well argued thread til the 'my cocks bigger than yours' bit.. A statement like the radioplay statement debunked anything else he was gonna say... back on track, it was one of the more productive sessions they've ever had, even with ed's writers block and mike out partying too much..i have a question though..
Am i right in thinkin they've given us more left offs from the Binaural sessions than any other session? other than maybe Ten possibly? we've never had that much extra material from a records sessions have we?
We have more from Ten, but that's it
Binaural: Sad, Education, Fatal, In The Moonlight, Sweet Lew, Hitchhiker, Puzzles and Games (if you want to count that)
Ten: State of Love and Trust, Breath, Wash, Dirty Frank, Footsteps, Yellow Ledbetter, Alone, Brother, Just a Girl, and a bunch of throw aways
What I've often wondered is whether or not they produced fewer songs from other sessions, or just did not release them.

for as good and as powerful as these songs are, the tracks off Binaural I listed prior are SO MUCH more interesting musically/sonically/lyrically-conceptually to me
so you like none of the Ten b-sides/songs from that session? You included fatal and sad on your binaural list

Well if you wanna be anorak about it, a very early quiet version of Life wasted is played at Red Rocks in 95..it's the same guitar riff without any of the distortion and it seems to be Ed alone..can't remember the track title but it's got a lyric something like 'ther was one of us..there were two of us, there were three and niw there's four' I could be completely off but it is the LW riff.

I think No Code also produced tons of material: Black Red Yellow, Crazy Mary, Gremmie of of Control, Dead Man Walking, All Night, Leaving Here, Don't Gimme No Lip, and maybe some more .....

edit: fuck! Bateman beat me to it!
I thought gremmie was a cover but i was too lazy to check
Yeah I dunno about that either lol. I don't really like either, but DGNL gets points for not being on a record I think, while Mankind gets a lot of blame in my book for wrecking the end of No Code, so that could be it.

I kind of like Mankind, i guess i give it bonus points for the wtf factor on No Code.
As a Lost Dog I probably would have liked Mankind enough, as in "its a below average PJ song, but its fun and new to me so its good enough" but on No Code...I think my feelings on that are well documented and this is a Binural thread.
So Binaural...no not the best album, but a great session. Over the past month I've been listening to PJ again and I realized there's a very clear breakdown in what I listen to. Since the start of this year, here are the chances that I put on a certain album when I want to hear PJ:
Ten: 10% (only this high because of the reissue) Vs: 0% Vitalogy: 20% Yield: 20% No Code: 15% Binaural: 20% Riot Act: 5% S/T: 10% (Listened a couple of times specifically after talking about it here to see how I felt about it now)
So I'm pretty sure that Binural, despite its many flaws is probably tied for my third favorite PJ album with No Code right now. Get a better tracklisting and it could probably be 1c with Yield and Vitalogy.

Heh i'll always be partial to Ten, i was 16 when it came out and it was a shock i'll never feel again. The reissue made me very happy. I'm also partial to No Code for personal reasons, it came out the day my mother died and it's ...something. I just really really dislike the overall sound of Binaural.
I've always had Ten in the 3rd spot because the individual songs on it are as good as any PJ album, see Black, Release, Porch, Oceans, Garden, etc. I'd still say Ten is their third best, but for a favorites list its fallen, since I really never have a desire to put it on. (Vs is better, and I like it more, than RA or S/T also FTR)

I'm still pretty uncomfortable with reading stuff like "vs is better", i like Ten best but i'm not saying it's better.
