Interesting. So, most of those who like it skew toward the mid-career era.

The reason I ask is because, to me, stuff from Binaural on didn't have the same energy as the stuff that got me into them. I was a Ten-era fan, and shit, when Vs. came out, loving this band felt like you are on the forefront of some big crusade against apathy and suck. There was this passion there that pretty much coasted me through the suckitude of high school.

Binaural is a thick album, very introspective and philosophical. If you like MMJ, it's their Evil Urges. Passion was still in the front seat as always, but probably riding shotgun. And that's not bad to my ears, just different. Less dire.

To be fair, I got into the band in 1997 but I got into the albums chronologically. So it was still Ten that grabbed me initially.

Bring it, Canada.

Binaural is great, but could have been the greatest PJ album with a slightly tweaked song selection.

Take out Rival and this is dead on.

I was anti Rival for years. I'm embarrassed to even admit that.

the tone of the guitars on that one is unmatched in the pearl jam catalog, at least to these ears

i love that mike gratuitous solos are kept to an absolute minimum on this one

interestingly, my favorite pearl jam records find mike taking a reduced role

As McP would say, Pearl Jam is at their best when they focus on the roll, not the rock.

so you're saying focus is, in general, a necessary - though not sufficient - ingredient for some degree of musical success?

Focus sure helps.
