I feel like in the 2000 tour and the 2003 tour, Eddie would cryptically say somethign like, "this is the last show we're ever going to do" and on binaural or riot act, the last song had people thinking that that was their swan song.

For the last 4-5 years, i haven't really felt the band/ed play that card of, "this is the last show/record from the band." So when i saw that "the end" was the name of the last track on the forthcoming album, i was waiting to see if people were going to jump on that sentiment. I was pleasantly surprised to see that no one jumped on that.

I have yet to hear the End, but it sounds like people love it. So i'm waiting patiently and excitedly. But last time people loved a song a lot and i waited, i listened to thumbing my way.

What was the point of this thread? Just to reminice about those "we're quitting soon." days.

I feel like that was more fan speculation than anything.

I agree, but i felt like the played with it a bit too. i could never figure out if they were just screwing with us, or if there was something brewing beneath the radar.

No,they did put out comments like 'this could be the last record we ever make so we wanna make it a great one' and such..it won't be..they're too happy where they are and hopefully where they are going, in 5 maybe 10 years, they'll be known as the last great American rock band (hopefully still going at that point too) so hang tight..they're not going anywhere on us.

I remember this really only happening in 2000 (at least from the band) and I think that was due to them being unsure whether they should continue after Roskilde.

From what I've gathered from reading articles about the band, the times they were really close to breaking up were in 1994-1995 during the Vitalogy era and after Roskilde.

Virginia Beach happened just over a month later, so any notion that this band would ever pack it in seemed to dissolve with that decision. In the Single Video Theory interviews, Eddie pondered what they'd do if anyone ever quit or said "I need to take a year off." Jack left that year, in 1998, and was replaced. It sort of seems like they have every intention of doing this for the rest of their lives.

I think there was no speculation about "The End" meaning the end of the band, because it is clear once having heard the song that it is about the end of a relationship, i read somewhere ed said its about him and beth.

Ed said lots during the US Legs of the 2000 tour about the band likely never playing again. For example at the last show in Seattle he says something like "Alright this is it. One last night and we never play again... At least for quite a while". Several times it sounded quite definitive. The last time they played Evenflow he changed one of the lines in the verse to something like "this is the last time I ever have to sing this fuckin song again... yeah". lol

I bet they were gonna quit until Ed realized that he didn't want to go back to work at the gas station, so they started playing again.

I first got into PJ in 2000 and I considered them a finished band with an amazing 10 year run.

Probably confused it with Parting Ways.

He did say something along the lines of "this is our last show" during the Seattle show. I'm pretty sure he meant only for awhile, and said something along those lines, but it seemed very unsure at that time. There was a feeling that maybe they felt a committment to finish the tour and then would stop. Nobody really knew. I mean, they said they were very close to stopping after the tour in alot of the interviews for Riot Act, I believe.

Yeah, it was quoted right above you by Irving.

Dime, when did they say 'this could be the last record we ever make so we wanna make it a great one' and such? I don't ever remeber any comments like that one. It seems to me that it has mostly been fan speculation.

theyve kidn of always said that since VS. I think they really mean it. They dont put pressure on themselves as a band as the future goes, take the moment as it comes, stay healthy, and they know deep down they'll come back cause they wanna.
