For all you Producers, Engineers, Musicians who know some about recording from a technical aspect.
since i had some insights from a recording board about the recording of no code that some members had asked more details about, found the post i got my info from and decided i would share over here. this is direct from Matt Bayles. asst. engineer to brendan/nick on No Code and Yield, as well as assisted on Binaural. Here is what he had to say about No Code.
"Pearl Jam's No Code was primarily tracked at Studio Litho, which means a it was tracked on their 44 input custom API (preamps are all 2520 based) and a Neve BCM 10. Tape machine was a Studer A800 and Brendan had an MCI JH-24 sent out for us to safety things off after we comped whatever track we were working on.
The whole band was set up in the room together with a tri-amped PA that is a copy of the Rat Sound touring PA they were using at the time. Through some happy accident of acoustics the raging PA never bled severely into the close mics on the drums in that room.
Brendan/Nick used a pair of U-67's (that were Bud's) for overheads, a KM84 taped to a 57 for the top snare, 421 as top mic on toms only, D112 and Fet 47 on Kick, alot of stuff we all consider standard. Drummer on this record was Jack Irons and he has a syle that is all his own. There was a mono room mic too, either a Sony C800G or a first run Soundelux U-95.
Brendan is a tremendously talented musician and that really is key to his approach. He knows what he wants to hear and will pick/tune the drums, pick the intrument/amp combo that will do the job. He and Nick have spent years together and they keep a great vibe on their sessions."
