I did the same.

I like the song. I find the words get stuck in my head a lot. But it's more fun and interesting than great, and frankly I thought it sucked live, which is at least currently tainting my view of it somewhat.

I voted 4 stars. It's one of my favorites on Backspacer. The lyrics in this song aren't anything special but the rhythm of this song just drives on. I love the guitars and my only complaint is it ends to soon. The song ends on such a high note they should let it ride for a minute.

Took a while for this song to grow on me. Right off the bat, Ed's vocals made me cringe. It sounded like he was yelling (and not the good yelling), and definitely not singing. This still bothers me, but not as much.

Also, since the structure of the lyrics and the concept are very different from any other PJ song, I wasn't all that into it. The song reminds me of Dirty Frank. Because there is a character who, in the song, Ed (or the band) actually deals with...in a semi-fictional way. I dig that.

However, reading the lyrics through on this thread and understanding the whole story has made me appreciate the tune a little bit more than I have been. It's a good one and I hope to hear it live this mother fucking Saturday. Wooo!!!! :bammer:

Yes, and I hate the fade out too.

3 stars.

As much as love the start of this album, i do occasionally skip right to this song as it starts off for me the best 4 song Pearl Jam run in years thru to Unthought Known.

Like most PJ songs, this one has grown on me. Especially after seeing it live.

But I didn't really like it much at first, and I gave it 2 stars because "Meh" is a pretty good description.

Not even worth comparing to Even Flow because they're not in the same universe.

LOVE johnny guitar - very fresh and would have no problem with it being released as the third single.

Man, if only.

Don't get me wrong, I love Johnny Guitar - one of the best songs on Backspacer, I'd only rank it behind Speed of Sound - but Cropduster is an unheralded masterpiece.

first, thanks stip for this awesome write-up - and i mean it - amongst the ones that i've enjoyed the most

i think that Matt's songwriting within PJ is getting better and better - maybe the 4 other guys are more comfortable with Matt's songs, idk. but this one has many really cool new features: it's a pocket-epic in a sense, Ed's vocal melody is really something, the lyrics are (thanks again, stip) are much more meaningful than what they seem at first listen and the arrangements are pretty clever.

my main complaint about JG is the lack of a proper jam at the end, or a guitar solo - this song' outro screams "guitar solo" - i don't know why they didn't let Mike loose on this one...

This is officially my LEAST favorite Pearl Jam song ever, and the only one that I've ever actually HATED, I think. When I hear it live, I feel like I'm having ice poured over me after a long, relaxing bath. Total buzzkill. It also however provides me with this kind of interesting experience, of seeing what Pearl Jam would be liked if they were a band just like them except they SUCKED. I watch and listen and go, "how can this be happening. it's mind blowing. i know it's Pearl Jam, but it really sucks! Still, it's Pearl Jam, so I'm in, I'm listening, I'm gonna try to find a way to feel it--but it just sucks! How weird and fascinating to experience that. Thank God the next song will be better, back to themselves!" which is guaranteed, because like I said this is the ONLY song about which I feel this way. And the next song always KICKS ASS.

thank you :)

This is such an agreeable song I don't understand how anyone can hate it. Not liking it fine--but hate is such a strong word that should really be reserved for songs like hitchhiker :)

Just listened to Hitchhiker. Yeah, it blows. That was probably only the 4th time I've ever heard it. I confess I've rarely listened to Lost Dogs all the way through. So maybe there's a small pool of songs-I-barely-remember down there at the bottom keeping JG company.
