1. They recently released a great album
2. With a couple mildly successful singles so they are kind of "relevant"
3. But not so relevant as to be annoying as all get up (the early years)
4. And "relevant" only relevant because when you are fan of a band that was once huge people can give you that look like "I'm so sorry you're stuck in 1993" which I don't mind avoiding
5. And not overly marketed so as to be offensive (see band named after a spy plane)
6. We are years (a generation even?) removed from Pearl Jam being a phenomenon and being a lighting rod for all that people either loved or hated about alternative music. I recall being defensive, angry, and confused by the general public's vitriol toward the band. In retrospect I recognize the band brought a lot of the hate on itself or at least Ed.
7. And in retrospect I recognize that Pearl Jam was never making important music (when I was 18 in 1991 it seemed that way) but it was always quality and they never cheated us for a second.
8. Viva la Pearl Jam. What a great ride! Now my daughter sings Unthought Known with gusto and it feels great and of the moment and not one bit nostalgic yet connecting past to present.

You'd have to be special to understand.
I Kid.
I was referring to their place in music history. Whether they changed the course of music, influenced everything that followed, defined a generation. Everything that a music history class tells you the Beatles, Elvis and even Nirvana to a lesser, narrower extent did in their time.

When Pearl Jam releases new material post-Yield, the general rule is that the more accepted it is outside of the fanbase the less accepted it is within it.

Damn I chose the worst time to quit then
This board is like that girl you were in love years ago but now you feel nothing for her anymore, you just stay with her cause you don't want to break her heart, and it's convenient too.

Doesn't Backspacer not fall into this pattern? Or to an extent Riot Act? (for reverse reasons)

Also, the best time to have been a fan was back when Yield was released.
That's pretty truth.
Whilst that is truth, it was a fucking incredibly frustrating time to be a fan in Belgium. They came just once to Europe between 1997 & 2005 and then even cancelled, understandably, the Belgian concert. Now they came on our shores in 2006, 2007, 2009 & 2010. That's one hell of a difference.
