SUNBURN
There seems to be some confusion about whether this is a Stone solo song or a Pearl Jam outtake. Either way, it was never formally released, and we are only able to listen to it because of the recent leak. It is presumably a demo, but doesn’t sound unpolished or incomplete. It is a nice example of the ballad sound that Stone has had a penchant for in recent years. The simple melodic arpeggios that open it and the sweet, gentle melody have become as characteristic to him as the intricate, melodic riffs of the early years. SUNBURN is similar in style and feeling to FOLDBACK from the Touringband 2000 DVD.
There are a lot of things that I like about this song. One of the things that I think works well here is Stone’s voice. His thin tenor voice often sounds tentative. Here that quality is used effectively because of the lyrical ambiguity of the song. The build-up in the first chorus adds a touch of drama that the lyrics themselves don’t contain. I don’t like the clattery, busy percussion in such a gentle song, but it sounds good in the second bridge, which contains the sweet line:
Lost for the rest of my life in your arms.
I don’t understand the lyrics. The song is either a warning to a lover to remain faithful or a paean to religious belief. (Him vs. Hymn?) Either way there’s a sweet, wistful quality to it that Stone seems to capture so effortlessly. 3 stars.

I love this little song, 4 stars.
I really think this is a No Code (or possibly Yield) outtake until conclusively proved otherwise; I'll have to listen again (it's been a little while) but when this leaked I was really sure it sounded like Jack on drums.
Also, if it weren't a Pearl Jam outtake it surely wouldn't have been on that leaked disc. It was put together internally for Lost Dogs consideration, why would someone "on the inside" randomly pick some Bayleaf outtake? This track surely comes from a reel of outtakes for a Pearl Jam album, it just makes no sense otherwise how it could've made its way onto that CD.

I'll need to listen to this again before I can comment on it. I don't remember being all that impressed.

Not a bad song and I actually like it, which surprised me because I had not been a fan of Stone's singing. I should probably try to find Bayleaf and give it a listen. I give the song 3 stars.

nice little song... i heard this just before i left college so i think ill forever associate it with that. i think i just gave it 3 because its nice but not amazing... I do think at points the vocals are a little rough.

Listening to it right now as I type...which might be the 2nd time I've ever listened to it.
I gave it 3 stars because that option said "average." However, it certainly is not even 60% the song Even Flow is, when you consider the 3 star to 5 star ratio. In fact, if you're comparing the star ratio, then Even Flow would get upwards of at least 13 or 14 stars.

I really like this song. I really have no idea where to categorize this song in terms of the rest of the Pearl Jam catalog as it really seems like an outtake kind of song. The lyrics are not particularly impressive, but I really like the music. Simple but effective.

I listened again. Maybe they could have developed it further (it seems like there may be the beginings of a good song in here somewhere) but right now it is too flat and featureless to be worth more than two stars.

I remember this being one of the more popular tunes when the rarities disc leaked, but I was (and am) highly disappointed in it. Not really anything here that gets me interested.

Written about 60 years too late. Sun Phillips would have made a mountain out of it....fed it to a Cash or a Presley. Would have given it that back-of-the-head mic echo and swampy goodness. I think this song was disarmed by time before it was even written. It sounds alright, it's good for dancing slow. It's better than most of Bayleaf, and about 1/3 of Lost Dogs. Not a bad place to be in.

Nice song. Bit boring.Would be much better to be heard, as I expect it was eventually intended to be, with Eddie singing. I can hear it now.... 2 stars

Is it even fair to rate this? This wasn't a released song. This isn't something the songwriter wanted to share with us. If I produced something I thought sucked and people critisized it when they weren't even supposed to fucking see it, I'd think it was wrong. Seriously, I don't think this should be here. I don't think we should do SOTMs for songs that are leaked. We can talk about them and call them great or crap or whatever, but to do a formal review process is terribly unfair to the person in my opinion.
I'D WANNA DIE I'D BE SO FUCKING EMBARRASSED
What's worse, is this only JUST occurred to me. I've been reading this thread since it went up. I even rated the thing. Now realization hits me between the eyes and I'm thinking what the fuck are we doing?
