I literally get chills every time Eddie sings this live. It's Eddie's showcase. This is an unbelievable song, one of my favorites and the lyrics are some of Eddie's best in my opinion.

This song makes me cry so hard, but I love it. I can relate it to my real dad and to my step-dad.
I have always thought that Release was about a rocky relationship with a dad. It is a painfull, lonely relationship and all that this person wants is for their father to sit down and talk with them and to accept them for who they are.

That is the part that reminds me of my step-dad, we don't get along too well.

This part of the song makes me think of my real dad. I never knew him (he died before I was born) but I know that I am like him in some ways.

YES!!!!
This song is definately my favourite pj song! This song along with indifference has given me chills for about 10 years. These two songs really showcase Eddie's voice back in the days. How he could wear his in heart in his voice. Absolutely amazing.
I have turned to many people to pj fans through this song. One guy, he absolutely hates everything but Hip Hop and R'N'B. Even he likes it and plays it from time to time while he closes his eyes.
10 stars for Release, and a big thanks to Eddie for putting this on the album. If it were recorded for Vs or any other album, this song probably wouldn't see the light of day.
What can you say about Release??? It's absolutely beautiful and brilliant. It's the reason why music is so inspiring. Ed's voice and lyrics set a tone and a mood that is just bone chilling.
In a catalog of masterpieces over the years, Release remains untouched as the bands ultimate song. This is what Pearl Jam is about!

it was my morning prayer for a couple of months. it always makes me cry. i just love it and i'd be on the verge of fainting if they openned the show in Rio with it. but i swear i'll cry with my eyes open! (i'll write a song about it someday).

Release and man of the hour are a nice combination. This song is made by how well Eddie sings it.

July 3rd, 2003: It was the day after my first Pearl Jam concert, and the day of my second. I remember going to eat Chinese food with my buddies and they were asking me how the show the night before was, and all I could say was, "Great...just great." There was no way I could reach such an emotional high again. I was spent physically, spiritually, and my voice was gone; I was speaking in a whisper. So me, Bobo, and Relphie hopped in the car and drove down to Great Woods. It was a long ride, traffic was terrible, it was raining for a little while (I don't really believe in omens, but this sure seemed like one). The whole time I was worried that tonight wouldn't live up to the first one. We got to Great Woods, found our seats, sat through the Buzzcocks, and waited patiently. Patiently. Then we lost all patience and just wanted things to get going. You all understand. Then the lights went down and that huge reverb went through the place. Anyone that was there knows if was absolutely deafening when the crowd exploded. The band took the stage and seemed to just stand there for ages (the same thing happened at Boston 1 in 2004...it was probably only a minute but it felt like an hour). Then I heard the first part of the first note of the first song. There's a Smashing Pumpkins song that has the line: "Your world be shattered with nary a note." When I realized that first note belonged to Release, my world fell apart. I had so much going on in my life at the time: I was worrying about going to college in the fall, I didn't know where my life was heading, I had a slew of other personal problems. But those all came crumbling down. The song didn't even need to go all the way through for that to happen. With one note my voice came back, I felt like I could stand there for another ten hours, and my spirit was filled with the sense of I can do this, no matter what "this" is. One of the most empowering moments of my life.
The song itself: It pains me to say that Ed's words do not matter. I know that sounds harsh, and they truly are beautiful lyrics. But the simple structure of the song, the sound of the instrument, the sound of the vocals...it speaks "release." If you didn't understand the words, you'd know that Ed was trying to break himself away from something, to unburden himself from something, to take a weight of of himself. So when I listen to the song I constantly find myself forgetting what he's talking about and thinking of my own life: the things I need to get off my shoulders, the things I need to deal with. By the time I get to "I'll wait up in the dark / For you to speak to me," I always have tears in my eyes. But they're (almost) always tears of joy. It's like I said before: empowerment. I can do anything, I can get past anything.

i was somewhat of a PJ novice when I went to State College 2003. It was my 2nd PJ show ever, and I didnt recognize Release as the opener at first (i also have a hard time hearing). I became so entranced, it was the best feeling I've ever had at a concert (with HYLA at 4/28/03 a close second).
If i was forced to pick, Release is probably my favorite song of all time.
