Hey, I'm sure a thread like this exist somewhere, and if so, Mods please merge.

I've talked one of my buddies into seeing PJ in DC this tour, and he's not too up to speed on them (he has Ten - No Code and rarely listens to them). Anyway, he has no idea about how awesome PJ is live, and doesn't know squat from 2000 to Today. My job...Make him some mixes that highlight PJ's live catalog, and a mix from Binaural through Backspacer.

My loose idea: PJ Unplugged, PJ Plugged, and Best of 2000 to Today. For the unplugged, I have MTV Unplugged, Boston 3 '03, and Benaroya (sp??). For the Plugged, I have various bootlegs from 1998 through today. So I'm asking my fellow RMers to help me with the mix. I don't want these to be too long, b/c this guy has a short attention span (and he prefers rockers), so I'm thinking 15 songs per CD.

Suggestions?

For the "2000 to Present" mix I'm thinking:
1. Of The Girl
2. Gonna See My Friend
3. Grievance
4. Got Some
5. Sad
6. Can't Keep
7. Insignificance
8. Help Help
9. Marker In The Sand
10. Severed Hand
11. Green Disease
12. Supersonic
13. Thin Air
14. I Am Mine
15. Parting Ways

For the Unplugged (MTV, Benoroya, Boston 3):
1. Long Road (B3)
2. Of The Girl (B3)
3. Oceans (MTV)
4. SOLAT (MTV)
5. Porch (MTV)
6. I Believe In Miracles (Benaroya)
7. Down (Benaroya)
8. Fatal (Benaroya)
9. Off He Goes (B3)
10. Low Light (Benaroya)
11. Immortality (Benaroya)
12. Sometimes (B3)
13. Alive (MTV)
14. RITFW (MTV)
15. Parting Ways (B3)

Plugged:
Last Exit (Detroit '00)
Animal (Detroit '00)
SOLAT (Detroit '00)
DTE (LOTL)
Tremor Christ (Detroit '00)
In My Tree (Brisbane '09)
Given To Fly (St. Louis '00)
Not For You (Milan '00)
Red Mosquito (LOTL)
Smile (Katowice '00)
Immortality (Katowice '00)
Porch (Columbia '08)
Fuckin' Up (LOTL)

That's my rough draft, let me know what y'all think.

Whatever you do, just don't put too many Binaural songs, because if he likes them and decides to go and see them live, he'll be so disappointed that they won't play them.

That mix should include some songs by The National.

Haha, I've been waiting to hear "Of The Girl" for a decade! Philly 3 I got "Parting Ways" and that made me very happy!

Good idea, PJ sold out to Target anyway, so I'll just scrap this project and make a National mix for him.

Help, Help may be of special interest to you but I'd bet it's the first song he skips.

I really like it, but it's not the easiest song in the world to listen to.

I'm also missing some clutch live (plugged) songs like: All Night, Who You Are, and The Real Me. I may have to make 2 plugged versions.

I've actually had great results when playing Help Help for casual fans that aren't familiar with that era.

Good to know; I want to keep it there, b/c I think it's a really cool song. I love how they get all weird and freak out a bit towards the end. That song has a lot going on, and IMO, is definitely one of the more underrated songs.

It's my favorite song on Riot Act.

I'm not going to debate what to include in the mix. A lot of your songs you included I don't care for but that's just particular tastes. But for what you're trying to do putting on songs there is a reasonable chance he'll hear is a good idea

I flip between Can't Keep and Help Help; love 'em both.

This mix is challenging for me b/c my friend is a fickle SOB. He wants meaningful rock, but he likes things short and simple too. He appreciates the arty side of things, but the preference is for rockers. I'm trying to give him the 3 sides of PJ - soft, heavy, and in between.

Advice of the day : don't make 3-disc-30-song mixes. 10-12 songs. If they like it, you can let them hear the rest later. Don't overwhelm them with more than that. It mostly has the exact opposite result of what you aim for.

The one I want to really impress with is the 2000 to Present mix...picking from songs on Binaural, Riot Act, Avocado, and Backspacer (plus Binaural outtakes from Lost Dogs) is proving more difficult than I thought. I'd like to have 30 songs, double cd kind of thing, but I know this dudes attention span and I need to keep it between 15 to 20 songs (more on the rocking side of things).

Exactly. I'm doing 3 cds, but all different, and all with hopefully no more than 15 songs. So you're thinking just one cd, like the best of the 2000's, and no more? If he likes, then give him the live ones (plugged and unplugged)? That's interesting...didn't think of that. That actually could be the way to go, but since he's seeing them live in May, I want to make sure he hears the awsomeness of live PJ.

I'd do it one by one. But if he asks for the 3, then who I am to say otherwise?

Here's what I do (in chronological order--heavier on the faster songs)

1-Sad
2-Insignificance
3-grievance
4-parting ways
5-Can't Keep
6-Save you
7-Down
8-I Am Mine
9-Life Wasted
10-WWS
11-Comatose or Severed Hand (whcihever you like more)
12-Love Reign O'er me
13--fill out the mix with your favorite backsapcer songs since those are the ones he'll be hearing.

That's actually pretty good. I'd end it with Force Of Nature and The End.

Not bad at all Stip. I think I would cut WWS for MITS, but I may make a mix of that. I like starting with "Sad", good call.

For Backspacer, I may go with FON, Got Some (for sure), Just Breathe, UK, GSMF and/or Supersonic (he likes Mankind, so he may dig the Ed version of it).

Oh, I like the chronological order as well, I was initially thinking of how something live would work, like starting off slow, then the rockers, then chill it back out.

Include Undone. Every non-PJ fan to whom I've exposed that song has really dug it.
