I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say that they think Ed mumbles his vocals and you can't understand what he's saying. I'll agree with the second part, but it's not because he mumbles, quite the opposite in fact.

To me, "mumbling" means that you speak in a muted voice that ends up sounding like a mess of consonants running together with no enunciation. Ed's problem in his vocals is that he doesn't pronounce his consonant well enough, and concentrates primarily on the vowels when he sings. It's why we can all sing along the last verse of Black note for note, but we can also argue for days about whether he's saying "loneliness" or "holiness" in "Sad".

I dunno, not much to discuss here, just thought I'd throw that out there for ya.

i think it comes with being fans, and actually knowing the lyrics to most songs, having been exposed to them much more...it just flows for us....but for someone who doesn't have that luxury, i could see how they could have a hard time making out lyrics to certain songs........

It's usually a given that anyone who hears that I like PJ sings Even Flow in an Opera Man like manner. I've never thought of Ed's singing like that ever. Granted, I couldn't understand him all the time but all singers sing differently and phrase differently.

The most retarded criticism of the band or Ed I've ever heard

Yeah, his enunciation stinks--and this from a guy who has proclaimed he wishes he were a verb. (to trust) :) But, it gives him an odd charisma and makes some of his lyrics endearingly mystifying, warranting those repeat listenings.

I never understood that one. There have been a lot of songs that I haven't been able to figure out the lyrics to, but I understood most of the Even Flow lyrics without reading them.

Eddies voice is definately not newbie friendly.

His voice has a steep learning curve, like those tough video games to master. Once you have it down its blantantly superior to most singers out there.

The control scheme to Halo may be tough with the two joysticks and all, but once you have it down, its so much better than those easy to control first person shooters. Or any MMORPG, they are tough to get into, but once you are in there is no coming out.

This is why many people are turned off by PJ when they hear it the first couple times. Contrast that to the true, devoted PJ fans.

...and no, im not stoned. i dont smoke.

Good observation. Now that I think about it, you're exactly right, the opposite of mumbling.

All time "What is Ed singing?" line:
