I did a search for this and came up with nothing. Sorry if it is a repost of some sort.

I relistened to a number of the PJ records yesterday (Riot Act, Binaural, Yield). Some of them I hadn't listed to in their entirety for years. I wanted to go back, listen to the whole record, kind of "rediscover" it, and rank the songs on the album. I know how I thought I would rank the songs, but when I actually listened to everything again, some songs I liked a lot more then I remember, and some songs I liked a lot less.

Actually, with YIELD, I rediscovered how much I LOVE YIELD! I had kind of forgotten how truly great of an album it was. It was really difficult to rank these songs because I really like the top ten on my list a lot. Only the bottom three are songs I could really do without. Everything else rocks! Here is my new ranking of the songs of YIELD.

1. Do the Evolution
2. Faithfull
3. In Hiding
4. Given to Fly
5. No Way
6. MFC
7. Low Light
8. All Those Yesterdays
9. Push Me, Pull Me
10. Brain of J
11. Pilate
12. Wishlist
13. The Color Red

I will be doing similar threads for Binaural and Riot Act for sure, and maybe for each of the albums. I found this a pretty enjoyable exercise.

You've got Brain of J on there twice. Missing Push Me, Pull Me.

 Nice thread, Phat. Before Backspacer came out I went back and listened to all of PJ's albums just to get in the mood. Like you, I had sort of forgotten how good Yield really is. I was surprised how much I love the album, especially when listening all the way straight through. It's odd because I actually don't think the individual songs are as strong as some other albums, but together they make a wonderful experience.

1. Do The Evolution - Hands down, best track on the album. Top 10 PJ for me.

2. Low Light - Great song. This one wrecks me every time.
3. In Hiding - Great melody. Great lyrics.
4. Faithful
5. No Way
6. MFC
7. Brain Of J - On any given day #4-7 could be in any order. I go back and forth.
8. Given To Fly - Much better in context, but still never did a lot for me.
9. Wishlist - Great idea. Not as good as it could/should be.
10. All Those Yesterdays - Beatles-based pop. Fun.
11. Pilate
12. Pushe Me, Pull Me - #11 & 12 feel like B-sides for me.

13. The Color Red - I usually love the tiny experiments on PJ albums. Master/Slave, Pry, To, Arc, Wasted Reprise - love 'em all. This is really the track on a PJ album that I would classify as "filler." I really don't see the point. Even the hidden track is stronger (IMO).

1. Do the Evolution
2. Brain of J.
3. Given To Fly

Three classics of the record. Brain of J. is their most kick-ass punk rocker with an amazing chorus.

4. All Those Yesterdays
5. Low Light
6. No Way
7. Faithfull
8. In Hiding

Great songs, I still have to be in the right mood for In Hiding though.

9. MFC
10.Push Me, Pull Me
11.Wishlist
12.Pilate
13.The Red Dot

Meh. I'm still a bit surprised at the popularity of this one, considering how inconsistent it is (Given To Fly to Wishlist/Pilate to DTE to The Red Dot... hmmm, talking about going up and down quality-wise). I mean, it's a great record, but for PJ standards it is nowhere near their best.

Right, let's give this a go:

Excellent

No Way
Given to Fly
Faithful
Do The Evolution
Low Light

Good

Brain of J.
Wishlist
All Those Yesterdays
In Hiding
Push Me, Pull Me
Pilate

Meh

MFC
Red Dot

--

On some days I'd put In Hiding in the 'Meh' pile as well. I don't know what people get so excited about with that song. It suffers from the same boring chorus syndrome as 'Gone', but somehow no-one's noticed.

The color code :
Excellent
Great
Good
Average
There's no bad songs on this album, not one song that i skip

Low Light excellent song, great build-up to the solo which is simple but efficient, one of the very best ballad they've written
Brain of J good riff, great song, a tasty rocker
Do the Evolution the allelujah parts, nothing more to add
All Those Yesterdays I like how the song builds from the simple chords changes of the beginning to the whole thing in the end ("you've got time...")
Given to Fly another great riff, another great build-up
Faithfull the fragility in Ed's voice in the verse and the power when it comes to the choruses, the guitar bridge after the chorus, excellent work
Wishlist the beauty of it is its simplicity
No Way the guitar work is very powerful here with the variety of work done by the pair
In Hiding catchy chorus, good stuff
Pilate a short song, good melody, as a non english, I think I'm not as shocked as some you seem by the lyrics
MFC not bad, could have been made better but I dig the chorus and the ebowed guitar stuff. There's also the guitar touches in the 2nd chorus that really remind of car sounds
Push Me, Pull Me Experimental but it still has some catchy chorus
The Color Red When you have vitalogy as your favorite album, you are not at all disturbed by this song

I must add some stuff to my ranking.

Yield has a special place for me in the list of PJ albums

I was at the time more in blues rock after a metal phase in my high school years. I knew PJ mainly from the Vitalogy tape that my brother gave me. I also have watched the mtv unplugged and all the ten songs that were popular back in 1992.
In 1998, I've finished college and was beginning to work so Yield, which, I think, is the maturity album for PJ, fitted right in for me cause I was also coming to maturity (at least, i thought so).
I remember buying it and being mind-blown on the first listen when i went home with it.
I went to the newsgroups (ampj, those were the times) and downloaded all the 98 shows that I could (I remember that there was a site where the main image was the famous leaning picture where you could also get all those boots).
Since then, well, I've been a fan

Top tier--these would be among the best tracks on any PJ record

DTE
Given to Fly
Brain of J
Wishlist

Pretty Good
All Those Yesterdays
MFC

The rest of the record is pretty average, but nothing bad
In Hiding
Faithful
Push Me/Pull Me
Lowlight
No Way
Pilate

Except for red dot, which is awful
