If you need to be able to say "I'm a member of an elite club of PJ fans because I have a special recording" to boost your ego, your life was f*cked a long time ago.

I can actually, in extraordinarily generic terms, hear what he is referring to. S/T sounds much less sparkly and has much less sheen than Backspacer. That has nothing to do with the mix, but certainly suggests a lot more effort on prettying up the final product. I see how Spenno feels that some of this effect may simply be due to O'Brien's little keyboard and percussion flourishes, but "how the sounds sound" is certainly different.
Oh, and if someone records a show and prefers to not distribute it, then that is their choice. Are we seriously demanding that everyone who has recorded a show MUST publicly release it? It's not like these folks are openly flaunting what they have so we can all drool over their possession.

I agree. I just remember reading a post somewhere that the person stated they had some "rare" recordings and were not ready to share them. That is all fine and good, but why even announce that unless you want the attention?

When did this thread stop being about insulting Tim Bierman and start being about insulting RM members?

If the taper has a couple close friends that he lets have the tape, then I still don't have a problem. As long as they aren't doing what Rebar is referring to. There have been multiple instances of a few respected folks on this board having access to a show that was widely released later. I don't remember a firestorm then, and it would not have been warranted.

well yeah, i have no problem with that either b/c none of us will really know about it. i'm stritcly refering to what rebar is talking about. if something is "not for trade" you shouldnt talk about it on here.

Agreed.
Oh, and thinking about the sound difference between S/T and Backspacer, could some of that "sheen" be a result of more tinkering during the recording as well (I know nothing about what ProTools does, but it seems to be implicated in fixing notes, making guitar sounds more synthetic, etc)? I guess what I am saying is, how do you know if the sound difference is occurring during recording or during mastering?

twenty minutes ago I did a Google image search for "edzeppe" to find your old avatar to post here. I was amazed at the pics that resulted and forgot why I was there.

Y'know, if they made basketballs with their logo, I'd buy one.

Something's changed. You get stickers instead of a shirt.
