I just listened to those Matt Cameron - Riot Act demos again. Pretty much solidifies him for me as I really enjoy his songwriting. Someone else said it but some of those could be Wellwater songs for sure.
His drumming on the You Are demo makes me all tingly inside.

My brain says that Matt is my favorite drummer, but No Code and Yield are my favorite albums, so maybe I'm just kidding myself.

After that, it's Vs. and Vitalogy. This isn't boding well for Mr. Cameron.

Matt is a phenomenal drummer, but I'm just not that crazy about his collective work with Pearl Jam. For me, he just doesn't capture the groove, or the intensity that the other drummers have. His skills are best served with Soundgarden and Wellwater Conspiracy.

As much as I have issues with MC's playing, I keep reminding myself if he was gone I'd miss his playing, unless his replacement was Jack irons of course.
MC is here for the long run. We best get used to it.

doesnt match the other drummers inetnsity? huh.
Thats the biggest thing jack lacked.
Sure, i loved his groove....but cameron made the band powerful again and i love his work on slower numbers like all or none...
His songwriting kept the band somewhat interesting as well
I definitely don't think of Matt as intense, at all. Skilled, technical, fast as fuck with fills, absolutely. For me, both Dave A. and Jack brought in more raw intensity. Matt brings precision.

I always felt like Jack Irons was too old to fit in the group. He just looked like their grandpa.
Jack is only a few months older than Matt.
I know, but Matt looks 16, and Jack looks 85.

This realization and the reissue of Vs./Vitalogy have forced me to rank the drummers as such.
Dave A. Jack Matt Dave K.
