Three categories really isn't enough. I mean so many of these songs fall between categories.
They do, but I want to keep this simple. I am just wondering if there is a general consensus among people that Just Breathe and Johnny Guitar (or whatever) are clearly the best songs on Backspacer, and so simpler is better for that.
Chud, have a friend count to 3 for each song and if you can't pick a category by 3, he or she will kick you in the nuts. I bet you could force the songs into categories under that system.
But it wouldn't be honest.

I like the Ed solo versions a lot.
I really dislike the version on the album - the strings ruin the whole thing and it just doesn't sound like I'd want it to. I just can't listen to it, let alone really enjoy it.
I really feel like that song didn't belong on the record.

you are so right about the strings. i couldn't remember this song, so i had to play it again. i think my opinion of it has fallen.
songs like this and Speed of Sound (and possibly a couple of others) have a bizarre, theatrical sound. they sound like music made for a musical or a 70s melodrama. its like i can see a character in a bad movie suddenly breaking into The End. Ed's funny delivery seals it for me. they sound constructed and artificial to me, compared to earlier Ed solos. probably just personal taste, as I am repulsed by all musicals, so i do not like these songs.

I hear this too, it didnt remind me of musicals but all the slow songs sound off to me. I think it's how eddie's singing, and the weird pronunciations he never used to use before. I hope he cuts it out soon. The first time i listened to just breathe i think i turned it off halfway through because i didnt like the sound of eddie's voice which is sad, because i love his voice usually. They all sounded overworked or trying too hard or something.
That said,
Good: Johnny Guitar Got Some Force of Nature (except that cheesy guitar outro) Gonna See My Friend

yeah i think its the over-pronunciations that make him sound like an stage actor reciting lines or something to me. the strings add to that too.

got some number 1. most of the rest is indistinct, except just breathe, the end, johnny guitar, the fixer, which i rank in that order. just breathe and got some are the only two i'd consider putting on a mix (PJ or broader), probably.

Good/Great songs Gonna See Got Some Fixer Johnny Unthought Supersonic Speed (maybe my favorite on the album)
Average Songs The End
Below Average songs Amongst The Waves Force of Nature JUST BREATHE (which could only be worse if, live, they added its sister song, "Send Me on My Way" by Rusted Root, as a tag...try to unhear that now)
