let's just hope they don't play either of those at the 20th anniversary extravaganza

Got Some at the 2010 Boston show was fucking awesome.

Got Some is really...not good. To me. I mean, I guess people like it. But it's not for me, I don't hear anything that great about it.

The chord progression is pretty bland, but Matt does his best to spice it up with some enthusiastic drumming - it's not really enough to generate a feeling of genuine momentum though. Ed's lyrics are dumb - not genius/dumb like, say, I Wanna Be Your Dog or Touch Me I'm Sick - just kinda stupid. That "puddle full of detriment" line is one of the most cringe-worthy moments on a Pearl Jam record. What the hell, Ed?

At least I think the Fixer is more interesting musically - it's just the lyrics that could've done with some more work. I have both musical and lyrical issues with Got Some that I can't really get past.

The Fixer reminds me of a 12 year old trying to right their own version of Unemployable.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah." chorus of The Fixer just isn't PJish. Probably the most out-of-place song in their entire catalog.

I'd probably agree with that. Pearl Jam has had some cringe inducing lyrics in the past, but this was just embarrassingly out of character.

That's one of the places I would've preferred to see Ed come up with something better, no doubt.

Is it fair to say its just the lyrics that throw people off fixer?

Fixers got some really interesting guitar parts..it's fairly great musically overall, I can see why the lyrics would put people off but its the emergence of 'new age man' ed..what with the kids n all..I expect more of that to be honest. It's a great song for these ears..i like it way more than a lotta other stuff they've done...i'm actually gonna make a list of songs i like less than the fixer..

I dont even think the yeah yeah yeah part was the original chorus, i think he made it the chorus that night on protools..

and structurally its a lot like felicitys surprise..check it out

I like chord progressions in The Fixer a fair bit, but I'm generally a big fan of Matt's songs so I guess that makes sense. I really loved it the first few times I heard it but then Ed's lyrics started to grate a little bit. I actually don't mind the "put a little x on x" thing but I just feel like he could've put a bit more work into it and ended up with something much better - it's like a first draft as it is. Maybe I'm wrong and over-working it would've just ended up ruining the vibe, but I'm not sure it's entirely satisfying as it is.

It's not as terrible as RM makes it out to be.

There are definitely parts of the fixer that I enjoy musically, but the overall composition, even sans lyrics, is pretty bad.

Agreed.

By that same token, I don't think it's as good as stip thinks it is.

But hey, this is coming from the guy who thinks Evacuation and Big Wave are some of the greatest things they've ever done.

Like, I can picture live footage being used in a credit card commercial highlighting an awards program that allowed a soccer mom to travel and see this being performed.

The next words you type better be 'the version from Boston was the definitive best version ever.' or some such declamatory erroneous statement :).

This, i feel is the biggest complain with the song...
Its not like Ed is lazy. The dude has been ruining his own life (in some ways) for 20 years trying to write songs to change the world. so its not like the guy doesnt care...

Point is...this song totally calls for what he gave us here. I just works. Im not saying its great, or mind blowing, or anyhting..but it just works...

And the guitar parts..are fantastic...its matt camerons eclectic mind and approach to music..and eds vocal delivery and lyrics bring it together...like johnny guitar...like felicity's surprise...

Not life changing tunes but fun slash great tunes nonetheless.

Actually he's made an alright living doing that.
