They probably said that when they were trying really hard to be the angry grunge rocker. (i think that was around the 95 tour debacle) They have also always said that bands play live and thats where they thrive.

Point is- they say lots of things. They have also said the next album will be a huge departure and will also be a logical extension of backspacer. And also may alienate some as No Code once did. Ed has also said he was tired of focusing so much on lyrics. But then also said continuing down the route he did with backspacer would not always yield the best results.

We dont know. Fun to cherry pick and connect dots though!

Sorry I don't have the reference - but this was during the Yield sessions - not angry grunge rock phase. I wasn't holding them to what they said, merely using it as a way to point out that they haven't produced much in the last ten years except good shows. I'm not going to cry about it (much) but it is a shame that they didn't record more earlier in the last decade when Ed's voice was still great rather than good.

If Ed sings the same way he sang Confortably Numb w/ Roger Waters, I'm totally in this next album

Do people really think that was good?

i do but i also think that the extreme contrast between Waters' completely shitty voice and Eddie's quite powerful barytone made it sound better than it actually is. i agree with whoever said that the Rock Honors The Who was much more stunning than this but the challenge was different.

Really illustrates how low our expectations have become, wouldn't you say?

It wasn't 1998 good, but it was good. You could tell he was fighting the same limitations he's been fighting with Pearl Jam for the last few years, but it was a focused performance of an appropriate song. I would take more like it.

I still there are a few songs on "Ukulele Songs" ("Dream a Little Dream" in particular) that really show how fantastic Ed's current voice could be if he simply chose material and arrangements which played to its strengths.

I enjoyed it a lot on an emotional level (but then it is one of the best choruses of any song ever) - vocally it is ok (just listening to it again without watching the video). Unfortunately I just watched David Gilmour sing it at age 60(?) at Live Aid and he pwns Ed (Roger can still just about sing too).

Ed is holding his notes too long IMO. That's where the most cringeworthy sounds are coming from.

And warbling them from time to time.

I think Ed needs to explore the lower ranges of his voice found in songs like All or None, Broken Heart, and Dream a Little Dream. More of that and less of struggling through Amongst the Waves-type songs would really showcase his current voice.

True. I was listening to the acoustic version of Hold on, i think its from 93 maybe...He sings so calm and deep there, its really nice, the same with the studio version of Crazy Mary.
