How many do you think there are? I was just wondering the other day what size venues they would play if they didn't have a nice chunk of fans that seem to follow them on tour. Or do the traveling fans make that much impact?

It's a few hundred for Pj tours in Europe. Thy're from all over. Nice people for the most part. They get a little screwy when it comes to queuing up and stuff though.

The number who do sizeable runs of shows is very small and I would say has virtually no impact in terms of determining whether the band plays a 15,000 seat arena as opposed to a 5000 seat theater. Lots of devoted fans do 2-5 shows per tour. I think you have a lot less doing 10 or more.
I remember around 2003 (I think) I used to see this one girl all over the country who would show up at shows with a Vedder For President shirt (or something like that, I can't remember exactly what it said). But the average PJ fan is older and the cost of doing multiple shows is so freaking expensive that I believe the number of true "tour kids" is miniscule.

I think you'll find more of these fans over at the Pit. I would say that there aren't as many as there used to be. I remember standing in line at Alpine Vally in '03 and overhearing several people say how they were doing the whole east coast or had been to 5+ shows before this stop. I had always wanted to be one of those people, but that dream has died over the years. I've only done five shows, but I feel fortunate to have seen them all over the country.

I'd really like to do this one way, and PJ's probably the only band I'd consider doing it for, but I think in the end the price would just be too steep for me.

Digster, I've done this around the US( 11 shows) and Europe(the other 18) since 96 and it's actually a lot cheaper and easier to do than you think, if you break it down and really do your research on what's the cheapest options available. Booking everything early is recommended, which is where the Pj/10c policy of announcing really really late gets annoying but it's actually way more doable than you'd think.
As well as being heaps of fun and getting to have great craic with good people (hey Hinn!!) for example

Well, you get people like me, who used to attend multiple shows in one tour to skew the amount there (e.g. I attended 10 gigs during the 2006 European tour and (comparitively) only 3 in 2009).
In my view, travelling fans make minimal impact. The majority of fans are local ones.

My extent of being a tour follower was seeing a Memphis and St. Louis show two months apart. Ah my days of youth spend on the road searching for rock and roll.

The Ontario shows in 2005 had a pretty strong contingent of people who went to all of them.... then again they were all within decent driving distance. Sadly I only saw the Kitchener show that tour.
