It's down there on my list but it's still way better than Avocado.
I don't know if I could go quite that far.
There's plenty this album does better than Avocado (the way it sounds most obviously) but I like some of the more thought-out guitar arrangements on that record and there's nothing that yanks my crank song-wise quite like Comatose, Unemployable, Parachutes or Big Wave on Backspacer.
That said, there's some absolute clunkers on both and overall I find them equally frustrating - I'm sure they could've come out with a really great album on both occasions but what they settled on feels like a disappointing compromise.

This I can agree with. Avocado and Backspacer could have make one really good, not quite stellar, but solid PJ album. As it is though, we have two kinda mediocre albums.

I actually like both albums better than Riot Act. If i were to compare.
i was just thinking about this the other day, and i used to have riot act up in the middle of my album rankings, but now i think it is at the very bottom, probably because of the song ranking threads and the lets listen to the album threads.
right now i think id go No Code Yield Binaural/Vitalogy Backspacer (we will see what i think next year but i still love this album) VS Ten Avacado( a couple of years ago i had this where backspacer is ) Riot Act
i still love the feel of the album, but the songs by them selves have fallen alot on riot act for me.
but anyway, back a little bit on topic, im still pretty damn happy with Backspacer right now

Listened to this straight through the other day. It's a really enjoyable album. It's a really fun and natural feeling album. I think this band has earned the right to just make a fun record without trying to make a some overwrought statement. In fact, you could argue they are making a statement by recording a song like the Fixer which I could never imagine them recording before this point. It's probably one my favorite sounding PJ records next to Yield and Riot Act. Not the best songs but the best sounding songs. It's probably my favorite sounding Eddie vocals right now too. I think S/T would have been perfect if it sounded like Backspacer.

one reason i rank Riot Act higher because a lot of the songs sound awesome live. ST is better, too, to a lesser extent. can't really say that about the last one.

I have yet to hear a live version of Unthought Known that matches the album. The best part of the song, the piano, is buried way way in the mix. Either that, or Boom just can't play it. Either way, for me, that song kinda blows live, but is good on the album.

I disagree here...I think I'm in the minority, but I think 90% of all PJ songs sound better on the album (especially Riot Act, Binaural, No Code, and Yield songs).
