Exactly. I mean, it starts with Life Wasted!
It's just occured to me that username: "durdencommatyler" seems to be saying the following: he doesn't agree with me that this a pretty bad album. It's got some pretty great songs, but also some songs which are awful and shouldn't be there.
I do disagree that S/T is a "pretty bad album". While there are some songs I'd gladly remove (and tend to skip) there are some outstanding tracks as well. There are a handful of 4 and 5 star songs throughout the album. The only real issue I have with the album is the production.

Life Wasted has grown on me. But I'd still call it a pretty mediocre track.
I think the two really big differences between my take on S/T and pretty much everyone else's is that I really dislike Comatose and I really love Gone.
Same here. Most of the song is fine but I can't get around that chorus to appreciate it.

To me, besides Severed Hand the S/T record is doing okay until after Unemployable. Then I think it just loses the plot. I do feel okay saying that it's overall a slightly better record than Backspacer.

agreed. I prefer backspacer for that reason but if I'm just going to have time for a few songs i'm more likely to reach for S/T

I couldn't agree more with this. Life Wasted is an okay song, middle of the road for me. Comatose is one pf my least favorites on the album too. For the record, I also dislike WWS. Gone, on the other hand, has always been amongst my favorites (along with Severed Hand, Marker, Army Reserve, and Unemployable) on S/T.
I think my tastes are a lot different then the majority if people on this board when it comes to Backspacer too. My two favorites from that cd are Johnny Guitar and Amongst the Waves. I also don't hate The Fixer (I don't really like it either), i am bored with Just Breathe, and I think Got Some, For e of Nature and Unthought Known are all very average songs.
To me S/T is a far superior album. It ranks in my top half of PJ releases and Backspacer comes in dead last.

Gonna see my friend is really the only hard rock number on BS though and i think it's easily up there with Life Wasted/Comatose/Severed Hand. And it's right up front so it's a little overlooked maybe?
Plus I like the quieter BS tunes (The End/SOS) a lot more than the quieter ones on ST. Parachutes is nice though.

i have a hard time concentrating on this album. i find that my attention quickly moves to something else. I never find myself head bobbing or feeling nostalgic or anything like that when listening to it. its dead air. Speed of Sound's sucking kinda draws me back in for a bit, but by then its over. but i will say that I find The End to be every bit as obnoxious sounding as some people find Just Breathe, which I liked, and still do.

I feel like what makes Backspacer interesting is the same thing that hinders it: the quickness of making the album
It allowed them to flesh out ideas and not get hung up on them, but at the same time, a lot of these particular songs could have been a lot better had they spent time on them. It was an experiment (whether calculated or decided for them by their personal lives) they decided to roll with knowing it could have been different.
It's the same process other artists go through.... a painter might spend years on a wonderfully detailed, amazing painting. Then after its done, all he wants to do is bang out 20 paintings in 20 days. It's an experiment in creativity.

I think you and I seem to have very similar feelings about Backspacer.
I'm not quite as wild about S/T as you are, it's still decidedly in the latter half of the band's catalogue for me. Have you heard the retracked live version I made? I do think a more balanced tracklisting (and some more sympathetic production) would improve it greatly. I don't think the album as it stands presents the songs in the best possible light.

Exactly. Completely agree.
agreed I call S/T pearl jams foo fghters album . The First 5 songs are great then you have to start picking and choosing from then on.
I Would of loved a concept album.
Backspacer is a more solid album. It gets WAY to much criticism, considering that it was suppose to be a light fun album they recorded over a couple of sessions. Which was different to their previous albums. It has flaws but is far from being a terrible album. Although I wouldn't agree there is any pj album that has only 3-4 songs worth listening to.
