Seriously, I'm so fed up with the boys referring to boring punkbands and pete townshend year after year. Don't their taste ever evolve? It seems as if they're stuck in some kind of parallell universe away from everyone and everything. On a: sidenote I'd love them to have a female voice harmonizing with Eddie as a concept. He should call up Cat Power (or pj harvey) and ask her to return the favor.

I'm so sick of hearing about cat power and pj harvey sucks balls. But just opinions here. I'm more of a mainstream jackass so if there was gonna be a female involved I would prefer someone more like amy lee or maybe kate vogal, or even do some sort of colaboration with the chick from paramore for the youngins.....yeah I know I can't believe I said it myself.

I'm pretty sure the guys have pretty much gotten bands they love to open for them, and thus, introduced their audience to said bands, or at least tried to.
Death Cab Ted Leo Dismemberment Plan (now defunct) Gomez Sleater Kinney Sparta (ugh) Idlewild
Strone also namedropped Radiohead (back when OKC came out) as being their then current favorite.
Point is, they like a lot of music. Perhaps they're playing it safe, calling on their influences, rather than showing you their iPod... God forbid we judge their taste.

What's the last time they referred to P.T.? I saw Ed mention Nick Cave the other day in an interview. I think it's more the media that refers to the same bands or compares them to it, just like they mention the same old facts every article they write about PJ. Seriously.

No they're both really good but as you put it yourself, you're more the kind of MTV2/Metallica/emo-forever-character than the one that appreciates good music from different genres.
Mine: Why is that? It wouldn't be the least pathetic to say that you think mount eerie or anni rossi make great music just because they're younger. That's a pretty weird way to view it :S
And as for OK Computer, half the world holds that album as the best ever so its no surprise and it doesn't thrill me at all to hear that stone likes/liked it. No honestly, Radiohead is a pretty stale influence 2009.

They don't need kids to influence them. They may like whatever they want and as far as i know they don't have identical tastes in music anyway. It's not like other people of their generation go on about how good some young bands are and how they're influenced by kids. Eddie did a song with The Strokes for example that should count well maybe it doesn't because it was a cover song of an old dead guy. If he started singing like Julian Casablancas it would be pathetic.

First of all....judgmental much? Emo can blow me those whiney bitches. I was only mentioning female singers not the bands as a whole. Second I have a "very" wide range of music that I enjoy from classics to bands like gomez, KOL, manchester orc, and then even blues, and fucking the commodores. I'm thirty years old and to me emo sounds like someone whining about every little problem. I don't like music for whinning. I can hear enough of that in day to day life.

To sing in a way someone else does is a whole different thing from saying that one artist gets you in a mood or sets a landscape that inspires you. I can't see why younger people cannot inspire or have an influence on older. Fine it would look ridiculous if they tried to be Kings of Leon (can't think of something worse) which I actually find is the case with the fixer. Mount Eerie on the other hand is not exclusive to the younger generation although he's in his early 30s.

Speaking of emo
And I told myself: "Boy, away you go..." It rained so hard it felt like snow. Everything came tumblin' down on me. In the back of the woods, In the dark of the night, The paleness of the old moonlight, Everything just felt so incomplete.

I just never thought of the scenario. I mean it would be like if The Rolling Stones were influenced by U2 or REM in the 80's.

Eddie did say that The Strokes First Impressions of Earth was one of the best things to happen in music in a long while. He once joined them on stage once to sing the chorus to "Juicebox". I really don't see how the op can think they are hung up on just a few bands that inspire their sound. I'd like to hear a few Nick Cave covers from PJ in the future.

Very well said.

Oh you almost had me. You really hear KOL on "the fixer"? I hear Split Enz, Police, and a bit of The Clash.
