I don't have any way of checking this at the minute, but do they drop a few bars of the outro when they play it live? It always feels that way when I hear one of the live versions and it kind of ruins the song.
I still like it, but I've never liked it quite so much as I did during my first listen to that terrible mono YouTube rip that made it sound more ferocious and dissonant than it actually is. Is it in G? It sounds like it's in G. Anyway, the really scuzzy sounding version through my phone made it sound like Mike and Stone were thrashing on Gminor over the top of the implied key of Gmajor - it was wrong but awesome (in my imagination).

In general, I think that ending really needs to go on longer. It's the best part of the song and it always feel like it's cutting off early.
Yeah the ending is really the best part. It is especially cool cuz there is nothing like it in the whole catalog.
I heard this the other day and I think for the upbeat pop punk songs that they have been sticking on the records of late this would be my favorite. I do wish the lyrics were better. They're pretty weak and I am having trouble ignoring them like I can on Got some.

It's the writer for 'Eat, pray, love' for which Eddie wrote 'Better Days'...anyhow, they have probably met. Since she gives an interesting speech on creativity and somehow links it to the word: Olé
This could very well be the a inspiration to this song, so check it out...(also for a good Tom Waits story )

Oh right. Sorry. That's unusual isn't it? though they never really jam out on anything anymore, i would have hoped a new song would get a little trash out towards the end part. I'll go find a live version. Hope it's not too noticeable.

You'll see.
I'm not sure why they drop a few bars from the outro live, especially when it sounds worse - I can only assume they forgot how long it was supposed to go for and now it's just stuck in their heads that way...

I'm gonna blame Stone. I'm not a great boot listener but now that i think of it, it's a little alarming, out of the shows i've seen, he quite often just peters out his playing towards the end of some songs, often laughing or just stopping playing before it ends. I'd say you're right about them just locking intohow they think it ends, but these upcoming shows will tell. if they play it that is..
I read somewhere Soundgarden are possibly gonna be playing new songs on their upcoming tour. Hope Matt brings that idea home. It's broadly the same audience and same dynamic. Need PJ to be a little less precious about the new stuff.

What's a good live version of this? I haven't heard one yet. Its either the audio sucks, or the band really isn't firing on all cylinders. Fallon's is probably the clearest one I've heard.

Pearl Jam playing a simian-stupid progression that happens to fit a similarly mindless Oasis track isn't near what Given to Fly was to Going to California. It isn't anything compared to the thousands of songs that feature the Am-F-C-G chord progression (sometimes referred to in the Motown age as the Stand By Me progression, and now more common than stars). It isn't Bruce's heavy lifting of Sam Cooke's 'Meet Me at Mary's Place,' or the Stone's pull from Leadbelly's 'I Can't Be Satisfied,' or even the chaos that is Zeppelin's loving thievery. It's an unoriginal, uninspired lick being played with a lot of joy for a mediocre fan-gift. Not exactly opening track on the new record, eh?
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll go back to learning the chords for Just Breathe. Let's see....C, G....F....say, is there an Am in there?....wellll.....
Preachy fuck. (I think I love you.)
