Anyone who thinks Sleight of Hand is overrated is on crack.
Sleight of Hand is as (or even more)overproduced as Speed of Sound, it doesn't sound good on the album and it doesn't deserve that love. If I could expand my Overrated list, Cropduster, Big Wave, Supersonic, Evacuation and I Am Mine would enter the list to. (Even I enjoying Cropduster, its just a nice song, not even close to be a masterpiece)
again, how could these songs be overrated? nobody outside the PJ fandom knows about those and they're hardly favourites on this very board. why simply start a thread about songs you dislike?
Because they are treated by those who likes like "FUCKING MASTERPIECES OF THE GREAT GREATNESS EVER EXISTED". And they are not.
by that logic you could list any song you dislike under "overrated" because there's no song in PJ's repertoire that are universally hated (even Sweet Lew has some supporters).

Not at all, my friend. There's a difference to have "supporters" and to have "THIS SONG IS PURE GENIUOUS AND ALL THE OTHER ARE CRAP" kind of fan. I for myself love Parachutes and Sleight Of Hand, but some people treat it like its somekind of golden idol of some sort, when in my view is not. Ya know what I mean?

yeah i know. it still doesn't work for Supersonic. i'm pretty sure that no one's ever stated that it was anything more than a great rocker (personally, i think it's one of their most unimaginative songs but i quite enjoy the instrumental break and the part right after it when the slide guitar kicks in).
some people will defend Evacuation until they make total fools of themselves but it's still not overrated IMO.

i disagree with all of this save for Grievance. Black deserves the praise it gets, which is rare among this kind of songs. Got Some is ok. nothing overrated about it in my opinion. the rest is top-shelf PJ songs.
If I never hear "do do do do do do do" again, I'll be a pretty happy guy.

I don't know, it's kind of a gross power-ballad. It's almost insufferably cheesy - I can only tolerate it live because the solo is usually pretty great. I'd never want to hear the album version again.

"Black" is pretty cheesy, except it has a great melody and a credible performance. It doesn't really feel as over-the-top or theatrical as the lyrics would lead you to believe. I think it's a great song.

that's the key. Almost any 'woe is me, I just lost the person I loved' song is going to be cheesy because it is such a raw, powerful, but common experience. It is how common the experience and subject matter is that makes it so generic and cheesy. One of the things that black a good song is that Eddie is able to make it seems the way it felt the first time you went through it as opposed to say, Don't Know What You've Got 'Til It's Gone, where you are watching someone else's hysterical (over)reaction.

I wasn't really talking about the lyrics, though I guess they're not really my cup of tea either - it's the general rock ballad vibe I'm not crazy about. I don't know, it's just not my thing.

I think it comes across a lot better in later years, divorced from Ten's production style and Eddie's early 90's vocal mannerisms. A lot of the 2000 versions were understated and superb, and in some versions I feel like I remember Eddie omitting the "do do do"s completely and letting Mike just work them into the solo.
It is probably a little overrated though. It's often shortlisted as one of PJ's greatest achievements and I definitely don't think it's that.

it's nice that he aged the song. I don't think I would have wanted the later black in the earlier years, but that kind of broken hearted bombast doesn't make sense coming from an older person. Black is a younger person's song that he's aged effectively.

Bear in mind, overrated is not the same thing as bad.
