Doesn't work like that sadly.

and, maybe, mostly I just want pearl jam to play what they are passionate about. As long as they really feel it and sell it to me - I will enjoy the show. Unfortunately, lately, I am not convinced even though i have enjoyed the last couple records.

i think pearl jam are confused about who their fans are. They are still around (and releasing relatively relevant records and constantly touring) because of the fans that stuck with them in the non-fist pumping years. It appears as though the band is "rewarding the faithful" by playing them the fist pumpers that they fell in love with in the first place . However, i think the only people that really NEED to hear those songs are the ones that, ironically, left the bandwagon during non fist pump anthem years.

So, PJ, get your head on straight. Your "real" fans, the ones you should cater to more, are the ones who rather you play all or none because you love it, instead of Even Flow just because your rube fist pumper fans want to hear it.

perhaps, but RM may also be confusing itself with PJ's fan base.

I'm clearly one of the faithful and when I got to hear Black Red Yellow and slow Lukin at my last show I was thrilled, and they were highlights of the night. But when you're there they aren't the same as Betterman, and 90% of the building knows that.

Could you guys go back to mocking Stip? That was really funny.

It's kinda surreal for me b/c I admire Stip and I wrote a whole dissertation on agency-- I love the way this guy has brought his intellectual endeavors so naturally into his love for this band, and also the way you guys poke fun at him for it. :haha:

I still don't know what agency means in the context he uses it in. I like it that way though:) good to know pj are in safer hands than mine.

agency means (in the sense I was using in the binaural thread) the ability for a person to exert some control over the world around them. To believe that they have the capacity to impact their surroundings and at least partially help author them. It can be political, it can be social, it can be personal. But you have agency when you feel like you matter enough to make the world respond to you in some way.

For example, students who come from more privileged backgrounds are often far more comfortable asking for help, extensions, etc. than students from less privileged backgrounds. When their lives overwhelm them it rarely occurs to them that if they ask for help they are important enough to get it, that exceptions can be made for them. So they withdraw. That speaks to a lack of agency. Wealthy and more educated people vote in higher numbers at least in part because they have a healthier sense of agency--they expect the world to give a shit what they think.

So my read on Binaural, at any rate, was that it was a record about agency, about feeling powerless in almost all aspects of your life.

The most stip post of all time and in the right thread. :)

Is that true about sudents from different backgrounds? That's interesting.

You're spot on about Binaural. Ed did a great interview at the fine about that very feeling of powerlessness but railing on anyways. I transcribed it for five horizons at the time.

Not a good song to get live, since no one goes to a concert to hear a dirge (same problem with Sleight of Hand) and it is a tempo killer, but it usually sounds good when they do it.
