I like pearl jam a ton more than those other three bands, none of which have aged that well for me.

It's more of a "re-recording" than a remix per say.

PJ and Nirvana are the big ones for me. I think Soundgarden was a good band, but maybe not really in line with my tastes. I've never liked Alice in Chains, truth be told.

I don't think STP or the Pumpkins really qualify as grunge but those were the other bands I listened to most during the early to mid 90s. Well those and Beck & Ween. Lots and lots of Beck & Ween.

yeah, excluding PJ AIC has more highs than those other bands, but a lot of stuff I feel like I have to slog through. Nirvana had fewer highs than AIC or Soundgarden, but almost all the songs are pretty good

Despite the fact that I like to use the douche bag term "eclectic" when describing my musical taste. I'm now realizing all my favorite bands are from this era. PJ, Mogwai and Pavement. Maybe I'm not so douchy after all...

Nirvana used to be my favorite band until I discovered Vs around 94 then Kurt died and PJ became my favorite band of the 4. I like AIC and Soundgarden but they are not in my top 10 list that includes the first two. After Nirvana ended, and Dave Grohl made the Foo Fighters, I try to think that somehow is the reincarnation of Nirvana, at least is 1/3 of what was Nirvana. Can we consider the Foo Fighters a replacement of Nirvana somehow in the big four of 2012? Maybe is a wishful thinking.

I can't not rate Nirvana at number one: there's probably no band that's had a bigger impact on me, personally. They were the first band I was utterly obsessed with and I can't imagine I would ever have picked up a guitar were it not for them - as well as that, I discovered tons of cool bands by checking out bands they were into and bands they played shows with. Pearl Jam, well, yeah - number two, no question. Alice in Chains have one record I really love (Dirt) and a bunch of other scattered great tunes, by that measure Soundgarden easily have them beat by having multiple fantastic albums and a very strong catalogue in general.
