Let's be real, I'll probably return to this slightly more often than I will Backspacer.

That's not to say it's the greatest thing I've ever heard, far from it, but there's some good musical ideas going on. There's something I really enjoy about Jeff's songwriting sensibility.

Yes, I hope there will be more of Jeff on the next PJ record. Whether you like his songs or not it's almost always a refreshing new sound for the band (pilate, sleight of hand or even got some). On this solo record you can clearly hear some of that unique sound and I agree that some of these songs could work as PJ songs and possibly even better than some on backspacer.

Quote:
Jeff Ament "While My Heart Beats" Album Review — 4.5 out of 5 stars - By ARTISTdirect.com editor-in-chief Rick Florino…

Jeff Ament's second solo album, While My Heart Beats, is utterly and undeniably alive.

The legendary Pearl Jam bassist paints a poetic pastiche of sounds, spanning a palette of tribal percussion and a distorted guitar hum. Ament's constructed a psychedelic and philosophical journey commencing with the tambourine jangle and riff stomp of "Ulcers & the Apocalypse". Lyrically, it's a remembrance of youth that's instantly poignant.

Running down the line, "When the Fire Comes" exudes a cinematic elegance as the song builds into an impressively catchy refrain. Meanwhile, his signature bass thud punctuates "War in Your Eyes" with a heavy punch that guarantees another knockout rocker.

"Give It a Name" glides along on a snappy riff and a resounding vocal echo. Then, there's the standout acoustic "Take My Hand", where he proclaims, "Angels burn". His elegant lyrical prose begs a closer listen and ultimately pulls in the audience just a little closer. Everything culminates during the spacey dreamscape of "Never Forget", which pulls together into another vibrant lullaby.

The album's a true gem, and Ament constructs a personal ride that's worth taking. Your heart might beat even a little faster by the end of it.

There is some hysterical hyperbole in that review.

Same. There's a nice track with a bunch of feedback on the outro jam which is cool. I find the lyrics a bit standard but the moods and the feel of the music are super good.

So, Jeff was wearing his own shirt Saturday night, and there's a picture of him wearing it in Deep Magazine. Does that make him douchey?
