So I noticed this in the Backspacer credits and wasn't sure what it was about and then looked into it some more and noticed that Matt appears to have different names for his music endeavors (is this right?)
Each member of the band uses a publishing name (this is news to me). Not the nicknames they use sometimes in the album credits (jerome turner, al nostreet), but nomenclatures more akin to companies or organizations. Is this some type of legal practice/protection?
Scribing C-Ment Songs - Jeff Ament Theory of Color - (I assume Matt Cameron) Write Treatage Music - Stone Gossard Jumpin' Cat Music - Mike McCready Innocent Bystander - Eddie Vedder
I searched for a thread to find out if "Theory of Color" was Matt or Boom but couldn't find anything. A publishing name that Matt C. has used in the past is Walpurgis Night Music, however this name doesn't appear on any Pearl Jam albums (as far as i've found).
Any more info about all this would be appreciated.

i've read some more this morning, it has to do w/ The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP),
Quote:
which is a membership association of more than 435,000 U.S. composers, songwriters, lyricists, and music publishers of every kind of music. Through agreements with affiliated international societies, ASCAP also represents hundreds of thousands of music creators worldwide. ASCAP is the only U.S. performing rights organization created and controlled by composers, songwriters and music publishers, with a Board of Directors elected by and from the membership.
ASCAP protects the rights of its members by licensing and distributing royalties for the non-dramatic public performances of their copyrighted works. ASCAP's licensees encompass all who want to perform copyrighted music publicly. ASCAP makes giving and obtaining permission to perform music simple for both creators and users of music.

Binaural lists "Serious Color". Riot Act/Avocado/Backspacer/PJ20 list "Theory Of Color". Interesting to note that for Avocado/BS that these appear only on the retail copies- the 10c versions don't list any publishing credits.
The Harrybu McCage CD lists "I'm A Seahorse". The Wellwater stuff I have doesn't have any publishing info.

I saw this and that's what confused me. What I'm thinking is that Matt uses his "Walpurgis Night Music" name for Soundgarden, he created Serious Color for his first Pearl Jam album and then created Theory Of Color for the rest of his endeavors (and maybe Boom isn't part of ASCAP).
So then my question becomes: Why would he have different names for publishing music w/ different bands?

I would actually make a guess that "Serious Color" was supposed to be "Theory of Color" but whoever wrote it down for Binaural misheard the name. And to add more confusion, the RVM booklet has it is "Theory of Colour".
I have no idea why he'd have different publishing names for his different projects. It's not something I've noticed anyone else do (and I am a booklet geek and do tend to look at these things).
I'm pretty sure I've seen a publishing name attributed to Boom, but I can't recall what it is.

Cornell's done the same thing. His Soundgarden stuff is published under You Make Me Sick I Make Music, while his solo and Audioslave stuff is published under Disappearing One.
In Matt's case, both Walpurgis and Theory of Color go to the same law firm. (And Theory of Color is definitely him according to the ASCAP database.)
I'm assuming it's something to keep the bureaucracy straight.

I want to be excited about this, but it really doesn't make any sense.
