hope someone can enlighten me here. like you, I've heard countless versions of Black. the latest being the MIA gig. and once again,McCready rips into a whole new guitar solo/riff. now, does this man rip these straight outta the top of his head at that moment in time or does he construct a whole new riff when he feels the need? i was wasnt too impressed with the MIA version and on others, totally amazing.(although he shredded it on this version, somehow it just didnt seem to fit)

I feel qualified to answer this as a pretty decent guitar player. Once you understand scales and how they fit in with their respective chords you can pretty much use your imagination as you play. Even more when you learn the common notes between a chord progression and the key the song is in you can make it even more awesome. It become muscle memory really. With black its really just improvisation over the E pentatonic and minor scale.

I think you answered my question man. but it takes something away from a brilliant tune when McCready does that dont you think sometimes?

Does the sound he makes inspire you? It still inspires me. Are you asking as an aspiring guitar player?

nahhh. i've no aspirations to be a guitar player...i play basic chords stuff. :D just that Black is such a huge song in PJ's arsenal kinda feel it shouldnt be messed around with too much.....even some of Ed's tags. but i digress.McCready has pulled off some amazing riffs to different versions of the song...i dont think he should stray too far from what fits.

the thing is, pearl jam is a live band, so songs will always evolve over time, even songs as old as black. its not really "messed around" with, its evolution baby!

ok that was corny, but you know what im saying

Have to disagree - love most of his solos on Black. I haven't heard the MIA version though.

The Live at the Garden springs to mind as a great solo - takes it to a new level.

I wonder why stip didn't merge this with the Black - Song of the Moment thread.

I was hoping this thread was going to be something like the Portuguese Eddie Vedder youtube clip.

I keep coming in to this thread expecting to read a revelation that Mike is actually black.

This Jay Z collaboration is really bringing out the racism in this forum.

Back in 2000-2001, when the Binaural tour boots were being released, one thing I looked forward to on each new bootleg was Mike's "Black" solo. Some of the ones from the second North America leg are particularly great, especially with the way the guitar is mixed on those recordings--Lubbock springs to mind as a personal favorite. Mike is never immune from veering into EVH-wankery territory, but the best "Black" solos are gorgeous and melodic. If only Boom would stop mimicking that "doo doo doo" riff on the keys...

Well.........who fcuked up my original title to this thread? Nothing as it seems/McCready was a reference to MikeMcFuckinMcCreadys changing riffs on Black. the NAIS reference i thought was self explanatory..obviously not!
but i think Kevin Davis(did/do you play for Bolton FC.) :D caught my meaning. some brilliant solo's on Black, some..meh! He's captured 1 or 2 brilliant pieces at times i think he should roll with forever.

PS. stop fuckin' around with posters title threads RM.
