I thought Watchmen was enjoyable. 300 didn't do much for me.

The whole "reboot" thing is annoying insofar as it does seem to necessitate another origin story. But that was only maybe the case back when the superhero movie was kind of a novelty-- now, we get about 3 dozen a summer. Are we not at the point where we could safely assume that the general public knows Superman's origin story? Or are we still not nerdy enough as a society?

I think it has a lot to do with establishing it's own tone as well as a new continuity. That's where Superman Returns really missed.

I guess because Bond isn't a comic book superhero, with super powers (except for his action-film talent with death-defying stunts). There's no 'origin story' convention or expectation in spy novels / films. People just want straight into the action, generally.

Wasn't Casino Royale basically a origin movie? I mean I know we didnt see Bond as a kid not getting enough hugs but still its James Bond Year One. This looks awesome by the way.

Well, some apply the theory that it is just a code name and, taking that to a logical conclusion, there is no 'origin' to tell. Well, outside of why the designation was created but even that would be kind of lackluster.

Yeah and the latest one goes into his past as well. More than I'm comfortable with. I don't need to see how little jimmy Bond grew up.

I think Skyfall did it just about right; you're right, we don't need the whole story w/ Bond. I guess that's part of his mystique. I guess, on the other hand, the sensational nature of an invulnerable flying man kind of demands some sort of reasonable explanation.

With all the old toys from the 60's showing up and M dying, they had such a chance to bring the "Bond is a code name" thing into the franchise's internal realities. They thought the tardo boyhood home storyline was a better way to go. :shake:

I really like the slant they're putting on this Superman movie, by comparison. High hopes.

I think this theory is disproven by that part in "License to Kill" where Timothy Dalton's Bond resigns from the Secret Service yet continues being "James Bond", or that scene in "Die Another Day" (I think) where Pierce Brosnan's Bond is looking at all the zany gadgets from his past adventures and reminiscing.
